Randy Travis has been admitted into the hospital with viral cardiomyopathy and is listed in critical condition. Viral cardiomyopathy is a condition caused by a virus infecting the heart muscle, causing dysfunction in the pumping mechanism of the heart chambers. It can cause fluid buildup in the lungs, brain, and peripheral tissues that manifests as shortness of breath, difficulty oxygenating, confusion, and edema of the skin and extremities. The condition can be caused by at least 20 different viruses and does not always spontaneously reverse with treatment.
