CDC Releases 2011 HIV Surveillance Report
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released the HIV Surveillance Report, 2011, Vol. 23. The annual report summarizes information about diagnosed HIV infection in the United States and dependent areas. CDC’s public health partners in other federal agencies, health departments, nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and the general public use the HIV surveillance data in the report to help focus prevention efforts, plan services, allocate resources, develop policy, and monitor trends in HIV infection. March 10 Observance Highlights the Impact of HIV/AIDS on Women and Girls
Mark your calendar for March 10, the eighth annual observance of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The day serves to highlight the burden of HIV/AIDS on women and girls, which is reflected in the following statistics from CDC:  One in 139 women in the United States will receive a diagnosis of HIV infection at some point in her lifetime.   In 2009, there were an estimated 11,200 new HIV infections among women in the United States. CDC Launches Spanish-Language Let’s Stop HIV Together Campaign
CDC recently launched a Spanish-language version of the HIV awareness and anti-stigma campaign, Let’s Stop HIV Together. The campaign—Detengamos Juntos el VIH—features HIV awareness and testing information in Spanish through a new website. New campaign materials, including videos, posters, and brochures, are now available on the English- and Spanish-language websites. Today is National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
Today, March 20, the nation observes National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The day is set aside annually to highlight the burden of HIV/AIDS on American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. According to CDC, approximately 20% of people in the United States with HIV do not know that they are infected; however, among American Indians and Alaska Natives this figure is closer to 25%. NIH Study Suggests Immune System Protein in Semen Boosts HIV Spread in Female Genital Tissue
