Never, Ever, Try to Calm a Baby with Drugs
The self medication hypothesis is a long established theory that people take drugs to try to treat their own mental or emotional difficulties. Under 15s at Highest Risk for Cannabis-Related Harms
A study of 1,303 current cannabis users showed that under 15 year olds are at disproportionately higher risk for developing or exacerbating mental and physical health problems. Reporting on the study, which was published in the International Journal of Methods and Psychiatric Research, the Province Newspaper quoted the study's author, Prof Benedict Fischer, as recommending that parents and policy makers focus on encouraging compliance rather than punishment. As it is only the minority of early and high frequency users that have been identified as having the highest risks to their mental and physical health, Fischer recom...

DSM-5 -- The End of Abuse and Dependence
There are major changes to the way that alcohol and drug related diagnoses are being described, since the DSM-V was published last month. The criteria for addiction, according to DSM-IV, was limited to substance dependence, which was applied to many different drugs, including alcohol, marijuana and opioids such as heroin and painkillers. The concept of dependence focused on the physiological symptoms of tolerance and withdrawal. A separate category of problems, again applied to many different drugs, was known as substance abuse. Substance abuse did not require physiological dependence, but instead focused on problems...
