Predictors of smoking relapse in a cohort of adolescents and young adults in Monastir (Tunisia)
Conclusion: The results of this study provide important information about beneficial effect of smoking cessation support for adolescent and young adults. More efforts must be deployed to deal with contributing factors to smoking relapse. (Source: Tobacco Induced Diseases)

Cigarette smoke extract induces differential expression levels of beta-defensin peptides in human alveolar epithelial cells
Conclusions: This differential expression suggests that hBD3, hBD5, and hBD9 may play a role in the changes to the lung tissue observed in smokers. Establishing differential beta-defensin expression following CSE treatment will add to our understanding of the molecular response of the lung alveolar epithelium to cigarette smoke exposure. Future physicians and tobacco: An online survey of the habits, beliefs and knowledge base of medical students at a Canadian university
Conclusions: Waterpipe exposure/current use was surprisingly high among this sample of medical students, a population well educated about the role of tobacco in disease causation. The majority of respondents appeared to be adequately prepared to manage tobacco addiction but education could be improved, particularly training in behavioral modification techniques used in tobacco use cessation. Determining the burden of secondhand smoke exposure on the respiratory health of Thai children
Background: The impact of secondhand smoke (SHS) on Southeast Asian children’s health has been assessed by a limited number of studies. The purpose of this study was to determine whether in Thailand, pre- and postnatal exposure to SHS is associated with acute lower respiratory conditions in young children. Methods: We conducted a case control study of 462 children under age five admitted with acute lower respiratory illnesses, including asthma and pneumonia, at a major hospital in Bangkok. We selected 462 comparison controls from the well-child clinic at the hospital and matched them by sex and age. We used a structured ...

Association between cigarette smoking and suicide in psychiatric inpatients
Conclusion: There is an association of cigarette smoking and suicide attempt in psychiatric inpatients. A descriptive study of the perceptions and behaviors of waterpipe use by university students in the Western Cape, South Africa
Background: Waterpipe smoking started as a cultural phenomenon but has become a social phenomenon. Hookah cafes are an increasingly popular venue for socializing. Studies suggest that waterpipe users perceive smoking the waterpipe as less addictive and harmful than cigarette smoking. The aim of this study was to assess the beliefs, and associated behaviours, regarding the health-risk of smoking the waterpipe. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with a sample of first year students at a historically black university in the Western Cape, South Africa. A self-administered questionnaire was constructed f...

The impact of smoking in the home on the health outcomes of non-smoker occupants in the UK

Comparing effects of tobacco use prevention modalities: need for complex system models
Many modalities of tobacco use prevention programming have been implemented including various policy regulations (tax increases, warning labels, limits on access, smoke-free policies, and restrictions on marketing), mass media programming, school-based classroom education, family involvement, and involvement of community agents (i.e., medical, social, political). The present manuscript provides a glance at these modalities to compare relative and combined impact of them on youth tobacco use. In a majority of trials, community-wide programming, which includes multiple modalities, has not been found to achieve impacts greate...

Effect of nicotine on exocytotic pancreatic secretory response: role of calcium signaling
Conclusions: The data suggest that calcium activated events regulating the exocytotic secretion are affected by nicotine as shown by enhanced functional response which is inhibited by specific antagonists... The results implicate the role of nicotine in the mobilization of both intra- and extracellular calcium in the regulation of stimulus-secretory response of enzyme secretion in this cell system. We conclude that nicotine plays an important role in promoting enhanced calcium levels inside the acinar cell. (Source: Tobacco Induced Diseases)
