Clinical application of Albumin-Bilirubin (ALBI) score: The current status
Publication date: Available online 8 October 2019Source: The SurgeonAuthor(s): Min Deng, Sally Wing Yan Ng, Siu Tim Cheung, Charing Ching Ning ChongAbstractPrognosis of patients that have undergone liver resection can be predicted preoperatively. Albumin-Bilirubin (ALBI) is a useful score to evaluate liver function objectively. This score is simple to use, uses objective parameters, and can stratify patients into grades. In combination with other liver cancer scores, the prognosis and survival of patients can be evaluated with more accuracy. Current literatures supporting the use of the ALBI score relating to prognosis of ...

Neurosurgical education in Ireland; a conference and medical student experiences
ConclusionsUndergraduate neurosurgical education in Ireland varies between Irish medical schools. Many students reported their medical education has not adequately covered neurosurgical topics and that they would like more exposure to neurosurgical teaching and clinical attachments. Nearly all students reported they would attend future neurosurgical student conferences and this may be one method of increasing exposure to neurosurgery as a medical student. (Source: The Surgeon)

Risk factors of lateral epicondylitis: A meta-analysis
ConclusionFemale gender and a positive and past smoking history were associated with lateral epicondylitis. Further studies should focus on identifying other associations with lateral epicondylitis and the pathophysiological explanation of such associations. (Source: The Surgeon)

Does non-operative management of iatrogenic bile duct injury result in impaired quality of life? A systematic review
DiscussionHRQOL may be adversely affected amongst patients with BDI who do not undergo surgical repair. Significant heterogeneity of data suggests the need for standardised HRQOL tools and injury severity systems when assessing outcomes after BDI. (Source: The Surgeon)

What predicts mortality in the elderly patient presenting as a trauma call? A report from a Major Trauma Centre
ConclusionMortality rates since the commencement of the Major Trauma Network within this age group have reduced. This is likely secondary to centralization of major trauma. Variables found to be statistically significant with increased mortality were increasing age, head injury, presence of Chronic Lung Disease, presence of metastases, decreased GCS and increased ISS. Laparoscopic longitudinal pancreaticojejunostomy for chronic pancreatitis: Systematic review of the literature
ConclusionsIn conclusion, LLPJ seems to be a safe, feasible and effective technique in patients with chronic pancreatitis. However, the number of descriptions published to date is very small, and there are no studies with high scientific evidence comparing LLPJ with open surgery or with endoscopic treatment that would allow us to draw firmer conclusions at the present time. Venous resection for adenocarcinoma of head of pancreas: Does extent of portal vein resection affect outcomes?
ConclusionsVenous resection with PD is associated with morbidity, mortality and overall survival comparable to that after standard resection. The extent of venous resection does not seem to affect perioperative morbidity and mortality. (Source: The Surgeon)
