A study of ecologically unequal exchange for 89 countries between 1990 and 2015
This study aims to understand the uneven distribution of CO2 emissions between high-income countries (HICs) and middle and low-income countries (MLICs). In this paper, I expand on previous research by including additional measures of ecologically unequal exchange and I also identify the underlying causes to that exchange. I use both productionbased and consumption-based CO2 emissions as outcome measures. The descriptive statistics for 89 countries from 1990 to 2015 show that the HICs are net-exporters while the MLICs are net-importers of CO2 emissions, and the structural relationship has become increasingly unequal. I then...

Publication date: Available online 4 February 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Xiao Peng, Qiao Liang, Wendong Deng, George HendrikseAbstractCooperatives are special because the members not only own the cooperative, but also patronize it. CEO’s decision has an impact on the overall members’ interests. Understanding how CEOs differ from members regarding their evaluations on cooperative performance and what causes the differences, is valuable for CEOs to best serve the members. This paper evaluates the difference between CEO and member evaluation regarding their cooperatives, based on a set of first-hand ...

Social media and life satisfaction among college students: A moderated mediation model of SNS communication network heterogeneity and social self-efficacy on satisfaction with campus life
This study explored whether and how communication network heterogeneity on social networking services (SNSs) is associated with college students’ satisfaction with campus life. In particular, it examined the mediating role of social self-efficacy in the relationship between SNS communication network heterogeneity and campus life satisfaction and whether such indirect effects of SNS network heterogeneity on life satisfaction via social self-efficacy are contingent upon college students’ origins (in-state vs. out-of-state). The findings show that having greater communication with heterogeneous others on SNSs was positive...

Characteristics of persistently unhealthy counties: A comparison of white and black mortality over time
Publication date: Available online 26 January 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Wesley James, Julia Wolf, Jeralynn CossmanAbstractThis research examines differences in white and black persistence of mortality in the United States over a period of nearly 50 years. Using data from the National Center for Health Statistics Compressed Mortality File, we calculated race-specific, all-cause age-adjusted mortality rates for ten time periods from 1968 to 2015. Counties ranking in the top 20% of mortality in at least half of the time periods are classified as persistently unhealthy. Race-specific mortality persistenc...

Objective versus subjective comparisons of body size against thin media models, media pressures, internalization, and body satisfaction
This study examined associations among the objective and subjective comparisons of one’s own body versus thin media models, media pressure, internalization, and body satisfaction. Korean females aged between 20 and 39 years (n = 300) completed an online self-report questionnaire incorporating measures of these constructs. Body mass index (BMI) and perceived body size similarity to thin media models were used to measure objective and subjective comparisons of one’s own body to the thin bodies of media models. When both BMI and perceived body size similarity were tested simultaneously, only perceived body size ...

The conditional effect of income distribution on mortality risk of men in Tunisia: Poverty effect or wealth effect?
Publication date: Available online 19 January 2019Source: The Social Science JournalAuthor(s): Moheddine Younsi, Mohamed ChakrounAbstractThe paper examines the conditional effect of income on mortality risk of men in Tunisia in a population based case-control survey study combining individual data from two databases on 11,231 survivors and 1,498 deceased. The main question addressed in the study is whether inequalities in health, as measured by mortality, in Tunisia mainly reflect the effects of poverty or are they caused by a socioeconomic gradient? Using logistic regression models with various income specification, our e...
