Periodontal vaccine: A therapeutic modality on the horizon ?
Publication date: Available online 28 August 2014 Source:The Saudi Journal for Dental Research Author(s): V. Thomas George , Annie Kitty George , Saumya John , Anupa Thomas Periodontal diseases with their poly microbial etiology, are a major cause of tooth mortality in the adult population. Current treatment modalities have resulted only in arresting the disease progression but have not cured the disease completely, nor do they prevent the recurrence. Hence there is a need for more sophisticated therapeutic modalities which may include vaccines targeting putative periodontal pathogens. No periodontal vaccine trials...

Human dental biofilm: Screening, characterization, in vitro biofilm formation and antifungal resistance of Candida spp.
This study determined the presence of Candida spp. in dental plaques of both males and females. Pooled samples of dental plaque were collected from 25 males and 55 females aged between 25 and 50years. Colony growth was verified and 30 Candida isolates were chosen for the screening. The identification of biofilm forming Candida was confirmed by performing several screening techniques (Microtiter plate method, Test tube method). Screened positive Candida isolates DV1, DV17 and DV21 were characterized by several biochemical tests including growth on Hi-Crome agar. Molecular characterization has also been performed for isolate...

Assessment of primary implant stability of self-tapping implants using the resonance frequency analysis
Conclusion All ISQ values indicate the high primary stability for tapper implants inserted in the posterior part of the mandible. Self-tapping implant design provides sufficient initial stability even for implants with nonstandard length. Further investigations are necessary to define the influence of surface chemical modification on primary implant stability. (Source: The Saudi Journal for Dental Research)

Influence of bleaching and antioxidant agent on microtensile bond strength of resin based composite to enamel
Publication date: January 2014 Source:The Saudi Journal for Dental Research, Volume 5, Issue 1 Author(s): Fahim Ahmed Vohra , Kamsiah Kasah The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of bleaching agent (10% carbamide peroxide) and antioxidant (10% sodium ascorbate) on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of resin based composite to enamel. Sixteen extracted human molar teeth were divided into three bleaching groups of 10% carbamide peroxide and an unbleached control group. The specimens in group 1 were bonded immediately after bleaching; group 2 were treated with antioxidant; group 3 were immerse...

Concepts of restoring endodontically treated teeth among dentists in Saudi Arabia
Conclusion The use of the posts was common and the belief that a post reinforces an ETT might explain the reason for its usage by the Saudi dentists. The use of prefabricated post, composite resin as core material and glass ionomer as luting cement is common, while restoring ETT by the Saudi dentists. Endodontic failure was thought to be the most common reason for failure of ETT by the Saudi dentists. (Source: The Saudi Journal for Dental Research)

The miswak (Salvadora persica L.) chewing stick: Cultural implications in oral health promotion
Conclusion The World Health Organization recommends and encourages the use of miswak as an inexpensive and effective oral hygiene tool in areas where it is customary. Its availability, low-cost, simplicity, and use have been extensively studied in regions around the world where miswak can play a significant role in the promotion of oral hygiene. As a result, current and upcoming public health practitioners and the dental profession should become familiar with the application of miswak within its traditional customs. Furthermore, efficacy studies are warranted to determine the effectiveness and usefulness of any potential d...

Gingival biotype and its clinical significance – A review
Publication date: January 2014 Source:The Saudi Journal for Dental Research, Volume 5, Issue 1 Author(s): Seba Abraham , K.T. Deepak , R. Ambili , C. Preeja , V. Archana Gingival biotype has a significant impact on the outcome of restorative and regenerative therapy. The disparity in treatment outcome is possibly because of the difference in tissue response to trauma. Hence in clinical practice identification of the periodontal biotype is significant. Gingival thickness can be assessed by various invasive and non invasive methods. Thick and thin tissues often respond differently to inflammation and trauma. Periodo...

Alveolar exostosis – revisited: A narrative review of the literature
Publication date: Available online 3 March 2014 Source:The Saudi Journal for Dental Research Author(s): K. Smitha , G.P. Smitha An exostosis is a localized, peripheral overgrowth of bone of unknown etiology of benign nature. It may be a nodular, flat or pedunculated protuberance located on the alveolar surfaces of the jawbones. The etiology of oral bony exostosis is still not clear. Racial, autosomal dominant factors, dental attrition, and even nutritional factors have been suggested as having an influence. In the jaws, depending on the anatomic location they are named as torus palatinus (TP), torus mandibularis (TM)...

Marginal integrity of provisional resin restoration materials: A review of the literature
Publication date: Available online 20 March 2014 Source:The Saudi Journal for Dental Research Author(s): Vahid Rakhshan Marginal adaptation of provisional restorations is a critical property of these treatments. It is a function of the chemical composition, setting method, and aging procedures. Interim materials include polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyvinyl ethyl methacrylate (PVEMA), Bis-phenol A glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) composites, and urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) composites. This review summarizes and compares their marginal fit in the light of the potential disrupting factors and the underlying mechan...

The subjective orthodontic treatment need assessed with the aesthetic component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need
Conclusion According to the AC of IOTN, almost 3.6% of the evaluated Yemeni subjects had a ‘borderline need’ to a ‘great need’ for orthodontic treatment. If the answers of those who said that they should have orthodontic treatment are considered, the need would increase to two-fifth (41.8%) of the sample.
