Learning from R&D outsourcing vs. learning by R&D outsourcing
Publication date: April–May 2018Source: Technovation, Volumes 72–73Author(s): C. Annique Un, Alicia RodríguezAbstractWe analyze how research and development (R&D) outsourcing influences product innovation. We propose a separation between learning from R&D outsourcing, whereby the firm improves its ability to innovate by using outsourced R&D directly in new products, from learning by R&D outsourcing, whereby the firm indirectly uses outsourced R&D by integrating it with internal R&D to create new products. Building on the knowledge-based view, we argue that learning from R&D outsourcing is likely to have an inverse U-s...

Market share and firms’ patent exploitation
In this study, we seek to determine whether differences exist in firms’ strategies for utilizing patents depending on their market share. Using a discrete choice model, the repeated multinomial logit model, we analyzed Korean firms’ choices of patent use. Market share is found to positively influence three patent exploitation modes: own use, simultaneous exploitation of own use and licensing, and blocking. And the blocking use of patents is the most significant mode that is positively associated with market share. Our results provide a basis for understanding the effects of patent policy from the industrial perspective...

Properties of opportunity creation and discovery: Comparing variation in contexts of innovativeness
Publication date: Available online 24 April 2018Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Raymond J. Jones, Anat BarnirAbstractThe context in which entrepreneurs operate and the innovative nature of the new venture are major factors in entrepreneurial performance and success. Here, we explore the nature of entrepreneurial opportunities and their innovativeness in the context of the discovery–creation debate about the emergence of opportunities. We empirically capture the relevance of these two perspectives ad hoc by linking the assumptions of the formation process to specific properties of entrepreneurial actions under different en...

Crowdfunding technological innovations: Interaction between consumer benefits and rewards
Publication date: Available online 30 May 2018Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Haisu Zhang, Weizhi ChenAbstractThis research aims to examine how consumer benefits stated in the project title and the number of rewards in the crowdfunding context interactively impact the number of backers and funding success for technological innovations. The authors collected data of 674 technological projects from kickstarter.com. Data collection was completed at two points of time, Time 1 (projects were still active) and Time 2 (funding periods were over). Findings between them were highly consistent. Two coding assignments were used. First...

What specific modes of internationalization influence SME innovation in Sub-Saharan least developed countries (LDCs)?
Publication date: Available online 31 May 2018Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Yazid Abdullahi Abubakar, Chris Hand, David Smallbone, George SaridakisAbstractSmall and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) located in the least developed countries (LDCs), operate in distinctively hostile institutional environments compared to those in developed economies. Better understanding of the determinants of SME innovation in such environments is important for the development of private sector in LDCs, because innovative SMEs are crucial for sustainable economic growth. Yet, determinants of SME innovation in LDCs have hardly been studied. Co...

Governance and effects of public R&D subsidies: Evidence from China
This study examines the effects of public research and development (R&D) subsidies and the governance of such subsidies on firm productivity based on the analysis of a firm-level panel dataset between 1998 and 2007 in China. It is found that public R&D subsidies tend to support more productive firms and the productivity of these government-backed firms is improved further after they get the government support. Less attention is paid to the observable or measurable performance measurements in ex-ante project selection, and the ex-post effects are stronger when the governance of the public R&D subsidies becomes more decentra...

Improvisation for innovation: The contingent role of resource and structural factors in explaining innovation capability
Publication date: June–July 2018Source: Technovation, Volumes 74–75Author(s): Yang Liu, Diwei Lv, Ying Ying, Felix Arndt, Jiang WeiAbstractThis paper focuses on resource and structural factors to explore the relationship between organizational improvisation and innovation capability. Although the role of improvisation has attracted increasing academic attention in fast-changing environments, little is known about the conditions under which firms benefit from improvisation. This paper addresses this gap using an organizational learning perspective that explains the role of a firm's organizational structure and organizat...

Performance evaluation of China's high-tech innovation process: Analysis based on the innovation value chain
This study is the first attempt to link the R&D and commercialization with a solid theoretical foundation and feasible mathematical methods. The empirical findings show that most of the 29 regions have low efficiency in the commercialization sub-process compared to the R&D sub-process, although there are regional differences in China's high-tech industry. Pearson correlation shows that the R&D sub-process is not closely correlated to the commercialization sub-process in terms of efficiency. Our analysis can provide information for the formulation of policies to achieve high innovation efficiency. (Source: Technovation)

Innovation and public procurement: Terminology, concepts, and applications
Publication date: June–July 2018Source: Technovation, Volumes 74–75Author(s): Nikolaus Obwegeser, Sune Dueholm MüllerAbstractThe growing awareness of public procurement as an innovation policy tool has recently sparked the interest of both policy makers and researchers. While an increasing number of studies is being published every year, an overview of the field is missing. Researchers, practitioners, and policy makers are often using ambiguous wording and have not yet reached consensus on the terminology and concepts involved. This state of affairs leads to research fragmentation and lack of knowledge convergence. Fo...

Relationships among open innovation, innovative performance, government support and firm size: Comparing Brazilian firms embracing different levels of radicalism in innovation
Publication date: June–July 2018Source: Technovation, Volumes 74–75Author(s): Daniel Jugend, Charbel Jose Chiappeta Jabbour, Janaina A. Alves Scaliza, Robson Sø Rocha, José Alcides Gobbo Junior, Hengky Latan, Manoel Henrique SalgadoAbstractThis work extends knowledge concerning the relationships among open innovation, innovative performance and government support for innovation within Brazilian firms. Data were obtained from two different firm samples (Sample A, on incremental innovation, and Sample B, on radical innovation). The main research results are as follows. First, in considering government support for innov...

Effective use of 3D printing in the innovation process
Publication date: Available online 7 June 2018Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Marina Candi, Ahmad BeltaguiAbstractThree-dimensional printing (3DP) is touted as a core element of a new industrial revolution, in which digitization, information and connectivity transform product innovation. However, while the purported benefits of 3DP are compelling, existing research suggests that the expected benefits of advanced manufacturing technologies are rarely realized in practice. This research addresses the timely question of how to make effective use of a new digital technology. A theoretical framework based on Resource Orchestrati...

Crisis management in new product development: A tale of two stories
Publication date: Available online 8 June 2018Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Yassir M. Samra, Haisu Zhang, Gary S. Lynn, Richard R. ReillyAbstractThis research examines how firms manage crises in new product development (NPD), and suggests that a high level of perceived crisis can result in better new product performance. In addition, the role of team communication is underlined in the relationship between perceived crisis and new product performance. Team communication is categorized into two types: formal vs. informal, each playing a distinct role in crisis management. More importantly, this study argues that there exist...
