Reprint of "The role of state ownership and institutions in the innovation performance of emerging market enterprises: Evidence from China"
Publication date: Available online 19 November 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Jingtao Yi, Junjie Hong, Wen chung Hsu, Chengqi WangAbstractAlthough it has been suggested that institutional context influences a firm's innovation performance, the role of regulatory institutions has been underexplored. Extending previous research, this study investigates whether and how regulatory institutions (i.e. state ownership, region-specific marketization and industry-specific institutional policy) affect innovation performance of emerging market enterprises (EMEs). Evidence derived from a large sample of Chinese manufacturing firms...

Antecedents and relative performance of sourcing choices for new product development projects
Publication date: Available online 20 November 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Pooja Thakur-Wernz, Olga Bruyaka, Farok ContractorAbstractGiven the complexity of sourcing choices in R&D, driven by conflicting points of difference, scholars have struggled to formulate clear theoretical predictions about which sourcing choices lead to superior performance. Our study contributes to the elucidation of this question by studying both the antecedents and performance consequences (project cost and duration) of alternative sourcing choices in the context of new product development, thus bridging two rarely intersecting streams of...

The limits of generalizability: Why good theory can have bad outcomes
Publication date: Available online 18 November 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Jonathan D. LintonAbstractGeneralizability is the goal for scientists (both social and natural). In the social sciences invoking generalizability is more problematic as it is often based on assessment of a mainstream population, but may not apply to groups outside of the mainstream. This is a significant challenge to developing appropriate policy and interventions suitable for Other groups. An example is given of how this concern was overcome through consideration of the Voice Of the Customer (VOC) and utilizing cognitive maps to consider the...

Business model innovation in cultural and creative industries: Insights from three leading mobile gaming firms
Publication date: Available online 23 August 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Paolo Landoni, Claudio Dell’era, Federico Frattini, Antonio Messeni Petruzzelli, Roberto verganti, Luca ManelliAbstractThis paper contains an exploratory analysis of the business model innovations (BMIs) that firms in cultural and creative industries (CCIs) undertake along their life-cycle. Despite the role that creative and cultural and creative firms (CCFs) have in the economic development of industrialised countries, they tend to remain small and often fail due to industry-specific constraints and tensions, such as the lack of managerial c...

Responding to reviewers
Publication date: Available online 2 July 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Jonathan D. LintonAbstractAt its extremes, the review process is the part of publishing that can lead to either non-publication of research or transformation of good work into a seminal article. While this process has tremendous importance and impact, very little is written about it. Consequently, a brief article is provided to offer advice and guidance in assisting new and experienced researchers in navigating this process. While the article is based on the experience of a management/social science researcher, similar advice has been found helpfu...

Internet of Things devices appropriation process: The Dynamic Interactions Value Appropriation (DIVA) framework
Publication date: Available online 20 June 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Lamya Benamar, Christine Balagué, Zeling ZhongAbstractThis research aims at exploring IoT devices appropriation process from a consumer's perspective. Using qualitative interviews on smart watches consumers, we identify four various stages of the appropriation process: symbolic appropriation, exploration, use construction and stabilization. Through the DIVA framework, our results show that the appropriation process is a dynamic phenomenon relying on both specific interactions and value type, linked to IoT devices characteristics. This research g...

The fit between firms’ open innovation and business model for new product development speed: A contingent perspective
In this study, we integrate the two plausible explanations by exploring the impact of the interplay between different OI implementations and BM on firms’ new product development (NPD) speed. Empirical results from a survey of 265 Chinese firms show that both OI breadth and OI depth positively affect NPD speed. More importantly, we find that an efficient BM strengthens the positive effect of OI depth while it weakens the positive effect of OI breadth. We also find that a novel BM strengthens the positive effect of OI breadth while it weakens the positive effect of OI depth. This research contributes to OI literature by un...

Transformative direction of R&D– lessons from Amazon's endeavor
Publication date: Available online 11 June 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Chihiro Watanabe, Yuji TouAbstractAmazon jumped up to the world's top Research and Development (R&D) firm in 2017.Such a rapid and notable increase in R&D investment has raised the question of a new R&D definition in the digital economy, which Amazon insists includes both “routine or periodic alterations” (traditionally classified as non-R&D) and “significant improvement” (classified as R&D), as Amazon transforms the former into the latter during its R&D process.A convincing answer to this question will give rise to insightful suggestions...

Technology before engineering: How James Bond films mediate between fiction and reality in the portrayal of innovation
Publication date: Available online 8 June 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Albrecht Fritzsche, Konrad DürrbeckAbstractImaginary technical devices and machinery portrayed in the James Bond films are known to have inspired real innovation activities. This paper investigates the dynamics of cultural entrepreneurship behind this phenomenon. It presents a hermeneutic analysis of the James Bond film series which identifies various patterns in the portrayal of technology which create labels and vocabularies for innovation activities and cognitive legitimacy for their implementation. These patterns have little in common with sy...

Project interface choice and knowledge creation: Evidence of international science cooperation in Taiwan
Publication date: Available online 28 May 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Huei-Wen Pao, Hsueh-Liang Wu, Cheng-Yu LeeAbstractTo heed the recent calls for more inquiries into the endogenous nature of governance decisions, this study aims to develop a comparative perspective on the performance implication of the project interface design in the context of international scientific cooperation. Using Heckman's two-stage model in a sample of 217 international scientific cooperation projects sponsored by the Taiwanese government, this study shows that project performance characterized by the collective knowledge creation is exp...

Scientific effects of Triple Helix interactions among research institutes, industries and universities
This study fills in this research gap by exploring whether the scientific performance of research institutes is influenced by their TH interactions with industries or/and universities. More specifically, the dynamic patterns of bilateral and trilateral interactions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) as a typical example with industries or/and universities, as well as their effects on the CAS's scientific performance are revealed by means of the TH theoretical framework. The research result shows that their bilateral and trilateral interactions not only directly and significantly improved the CAS's scientific performa...

Non-linear effects of technological competence on product innovation in new technology-based firms: Resource orchestration and the role of the entrepreneur's political competence and prior start-up experience
Publication date: Available online 20 May 2019Source: TechnovationAuthor(s): Ioanna Deligianni, Irini Voudouris, Yiannis Spanos, Spyros LioukasAbstractThe study applies the lens of resource orchestration theory to examine the nature of the relationship between technological competence and product innovation in new technology-based firms, and the moderating effects of the entrepreneur's political competence and prior start-up experience. Drawing upon a sample of 100 young technology-based firms, the results show that technological competence has an inverted U-shape relationship with product innovation, suggesting that retur...
