Visceral adiposity is associated with cytokines and decrease in lung function in women with persistent asthma
In conclusion, visceral obesity was negatively associated with asthma control and lung function; and positively associated with increased levels of interleukin 6 in women. We hypothesize that women should be studied as a separate group, and we suggest further studies with a control group to know if the uncontrolled asthmatic group is directly affected by visceral adipose inflammatory markers. COPD control: Can a consensus be found?
Publication date: Available online 22 March 2016 Source:Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia (English Edition) Author(s): M. Guimarães, A. Bugalho, A.S. Oliveira, J. Moita, A. Marques There are currently no reliable instruments for assessing the onset and progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or predicting its prognosis. Currently, a comprehensive assessment of COPD including several objective and subjective parameters is recommended. However, the lack of biomarkers precludes a correct assessment of COPD severity, which consequently hampers adequate therapeutic approaches and COPD control....

Blurred lines. Eosinophilic COPD: ACOS or COPD phenotype?
Publication date: Available online 21 March 2016 Source:Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia (English Edition) Author(s): C.C. Loureiro Because asthma and COPD are both inflammatory chronic obstructive airway diseases, there are several clinical expressions which can cause confusion, such as: eosinophilic asthma with fixed obstruction, which is a risk factor and might progress to COPD; eosinophilic COPD; COPD with partial reversible obstruction with no asthmatic component and also eosinophilic asthma–COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS). While at the two extremes of these disorders the pathoimmunological processes are clearly...

COPD: A stepwise or a hit hard approach?
Publication date: Available online 27 February 2016 Source:Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia (English Edition) Author(s): A.J. Ferreira, A. Reis, N. Marçal, P. Pinto, C. Bárbara Current guidelines differ slightly on the recommendations for treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients, and although there are some undisputed recommendations, there is still debate regarding the management of COPD. One of the hindrances to deciding which therapeutic approach to choose is late diagnosis or misdiagnosis of COPD. After a proper diagnosis is achieved and severity assessed, the choice between a...

Prevalence of secondhand smoke exposure in asthmatic children at home and in the car: A cross-sectional study
Conclusions Asthmatic and non-asthmatic children were equally exposed to secondhand smoke, because no significant differences were found between the two groups concerning the prevalence of SHSe at home and inside the car. These findings highlight the need to include SHSe brief advice in paediatric asthma management. (Source: Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia)
