Pharmacokinetics and Systemic Activity of a New Patent of an Inhaled Corticosteroid/Long-Acting β2-Agonist Combination for Use in Asthma Therapy: Fluticasone Furoate/Vilanterol Trifenatate.
Authors: Wolthers OD Abstract The present paper reviews pharmacokinetics and systemic activity of a new patent of fluticasone fumarate/vilanterol trifenatate and summarises the efficacy data in children, adolescents and adults with asthma. Bioavailability of oral deposition of fluticasone furoate is approximately 1%, of oral and pulmonary deposition 15%. Fluticasone furoate 400, 600 and 800µg have been associated with reductions in 24-h urine cortisol excretion in adults, whereas several studies on fluticasone furoate/vilanterol trifenatate 100/25µg and 200/25µg once daily found no suppressive effects. ...

Recent Patents of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Allergic Rhinitis.
Authors: Hon KL, Fung CK, Leung AK, Lam HS, Lee SL Abstract Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common respiratory disease affecting both adults and children worldwide. Affected patients may experience nasal congestion/stuffiness, rhinorrhea (anterior and/or posterior), nasal/nasopharyngeal itching and sneezing. Allergen avoidance is the principal step in the management. Nasal saline irrigation to remove allergen (s) in the nose is a useful adjunctive therapy in the management of moderate to severe AR. Symptomatic relief and improved quality of life may be achieved in the majority of patients with appropriate phar...

Bevacizumab for malignant brain gliomas. Which is the current evidence?
Authors: Koukourakis GV Abstract Recently, the improvement of innovative medications named focused treatments represents the consequence of a superior knowledge of the procedures implicated in the modification of physiological tissues in tumor. Focused treatment is known as the therapy which uses specific substances that affect selective mechanisms implicated in tumorigenesis and tumor development. Angiogenesis is important for tumor development and distant metastatic disease and represents a significant aim for modern biological substances. Bevacizumab belongs to humanized recombinant antibody family whic...

Impacts of Particulate Air Pollution on Asthma: Current Understanding and Future Perspectives.
Authors: Takizawa H Abstract The impacts of air pollution on human health and disease have been attracting attention, especially in industrialized countries and areas with heavy traffic burdens. Fine particulate matters (PMs) are considered as an important air pollutant, since it was reported that there was a significant relationship between PM2.5 levels and mortality by cohort studies in 1990s. Epidemiological and toxicological studies have strongly suggested a causative relationship between fine particulate air pollution and increased incidence as well as exacerbations of asthma, and other respiratory di...

Glaucoma eye drops adverse skin reactions.
Authors: Cantisani C, Ambrifi M, Frascani F, Fazia G, Paolino G, Lisi R, Calvieri S Abstract The term "Glaucoma" is used to describe a number of diseases of the eye characterized by a particular form of optic nerve damage that is often associated with high intraocular pressure (IOP). The open-angle glaucoma is the most common form that is also referred to as chronic glaucoma. This is described as an optic neuropathy with multifactorial nature in which there is a loss of characteristics of the optic nerve fibers. Therapeutic options for the treatment of this disease are different, you can take advantage of ...

Advances of knowledge on allergic inflammation and the oral mucosa.
Authors: Incorvaia C, Fuiano N, Frati F, Marcucci F Abstract Allergic diseases are common worldwide and are prevalently caused by an inflammatory pathophysiology induced by the exposure to the specific allergen(s). The development of inflammation requires the involvement of regulatory cells that include antigen presenting cells and T lymphocytes, respectively orientating and orchestrating the immunological response, and the activity of cells such as mast cells and basophils, that release the typical mediators of allergic reactions, and eosinophils, which sustain the protracted inflammation. Differently fro...

Peptide vaccines for cancer therapy.
Authors: Cerezo D, Pena MJ, Mijares M, Martinez G, Blanca I, De Sanctis JB Abstract For around four decades, vaccines of different kinds have been developed to treat different types of cancer. However, promising results encountered in the early phase contrasted with the results recorded in clinical studies. Recent discoveries in the vaccine field, adjuvants and delivery systems, and antigen presentation have lead to new patented approaches. The current review is focused on general description of peptide vaccines involving cancer antigen presentation, specific immune response, cell death dependent pathways,...

New developments in oral vaccines and mucosal adjuvants.
Authors: Subiza JL, El-Qutob D, Fernandez-Caldas E Abstract Mucosal immunity is the first line of defence of the organism against several pathogens and, at the same time, it is of critical importance in allergic diseases. Oral vaccines have been developed with the aim of enhancing the immune response to pathogens and for the treatment of allergic diseases. One of the major issues concerning oral vaccines is the use of oral adjuvants which could facilitate antigen presentation with the consequent induction of an effective immune response. The present review consists of an analysis, point by point, of the di...

Monoclonal antibodies in allergy; updated applications and promising trials.
Authors: Ozdemir C Abstract Allergic disorders, as asthma, allergic rhinitis/rhinoconjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis, food allergies and anaphylaxis have an increasing burden in the general population and a growing body of evidence has shown that an increased interest has aroused to seek for more effective treatment strategies. Conventional pharmacotherapy by antihistamines, anti-leukotrienes, corticosteroids and bronchodilators can routinely control most of the cases, in addition to allergen avoidance which saves the date. Furthermore, allergen specific immunotherapy stands as the only curative method to t...

New approaches to chikungunya virus vaccine development.
Authors: Garcia A, Diego L, Judith B Abstract Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne human pathogen that affects millions of individuals each year by causing non-specific flu-like symptoms, with a characteristic rash accompanied by joint pain that may last for a long time after the resolution of the infection. Despite intense research efforts, no approved vaccine or antiviral therapy is yet available. This review is based on articles retrieved by PubMed and clinical trials since 1980 to present. Virus complexity, protective and non-protective immune responses against the virus, and the most importan...

Complementary and alternative medicine for childhood asthma: an overview of evidence and patents.
This article overviews the evidence for the clinical efficacy of all major CAM modalities. Despite CAM modalities are extensively used by the patients with asthma, very few CAM patents are available. This article also discusses recent patents pertinent to asthma. Only a few patents on herbal medicine for asthma have been evaluated but therapeutic efficacy is not substantially documented. Parents seeking CAM for asthma must consult qualified registered practitioners before using it. Peptide-based allergen specific immunotherapy for the treatment of allergic disorders.
Authors: El-Qutob D, Reche P, Subiza JL, Fernandez-Caldas E Abstract Allergen specific immunotherapy (ASIT) and environmental control are the only etiologic treatments of allergic rhino-conjunctivitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis. The clinical benefit of ASIT relies on the selection of the patients and the identification and administration of the allergen, or allergens. Different routes of administration have been investigated, including subcutaneous, intradermal, epicutaneous, sublingual, inhaled, or intra-lymphatic. While subcutaneous and sublingual allergen specific immunotherapy may require from 3 to ...
