Life-threatening parkinsonism-hyperpyrexia syndrome following bilateral deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus
Publication date: Available online 6 December 2017 Source:Neurologia i Neurochirurgia Polska Author(s): Mehmet Osman Akçakaya, Nihan Hande Akçakaya, Mustafa Ömür Kasımcan, Talat Kırış Parkinsonism-hyperpyrexia syndrome (PHS), or neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), is a neurophysiologic reaction to the acute withdrawal/decrease of central dopamine levels. It is a severe complication characterized by rigidity, change in consciousness level, fever, hypertension, and autonomic instability, that can be fatal. To the best of our knowledge, PHS following deep brain stimulation (DBS) of subthalamic nucleus (STN) su...

Assessment of cervical range of motion in patients after axis fracture
Conclusions Odontoid fractures lead to limitations in mobility of the cervical spine even after treatment with methods that in theory should preserve the C1/C2 mobility. (Source: Polish Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery)

In vitro simulation of intraoperative vertebroplasty applied for pedicle screw augmentation. A biomechanical evaluation
Conclusions An in vitro simulation of intraoperative injection of PMMA in the vertebral body instrumented with screws (intraoperative vertebroplasty) resulted in enhancing its pullout strength by 33%. Pulling of one of the pedicular screws from the augmented vertebral body did not affect the pullout resistance of the contralateral one. (Source: Polish Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery)

Clinical and psychological outcome after surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis: A prospective observational study with analysis of prognostic factors
Conclusions Surgery for spinal stenosis was effective to treat pain and disability. In this prospective study baseline global psychological distress, depression and anxiety were associated with poorer clinical outcome. (Source: Polish Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery)

Comparison of dystonia between Parkinson's disease and atypical parkinsonism: The clinical usefulness of dystonia distribution and characteristics in the differential diagnosis of parkinsonism
Conclusions In this long-term, observational, prospective study, we concluded that levodopa medication related LD and TD were more frequently observed in PD than in atypical parkinsonism. Conversely, levodopa medication non-related CFD and CD were more frequently observed in atypical parkinsonism, and coexisting of some types of multiple dystonia may be unique features of atypical parkinsonism. TD or multiple types of LD, might be representative of PD rather than atypical parkinsonism. (Source: Polish Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery)

Association between hemostatic markers, serum lipid fractions and progression of cerebral small vessel disease: A 2-year follow-up study
Conclusion We found a relationship between fibrinogen and risk of radiological progression of SVD regardless of the clinical SVD manifestation. In addition, lower HDL and increased TF predicted development of new lacunes, and higher BTG was associated with risk of WMLs progression. (Source: Polish Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery)

Diagnostics, treatment and secondary prevention of ischemic stroke in the Silesian Province, Poland between 2009 and 2015
Conclusions There has been observed a significant improvement in the quality of diagnosis and treatment of acute ischemic stroke during recent years. However, further actions are required both in terms of reperfusion treatment (thrombolysis and/or thrombectomy) and secondary prevention of stroke. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in IgA vasculitis: Neuroimaging of a 14-year-old child
Publication date: Available online 14 November 2017 Source:Neurologia i Neurochirurgia Polska Author(s): Harun Arslan, Alpaslan Yavuz, Ayşe Arslan, Abdurrahman Aycan IgA vasculitis (IgAV) is a leukocytoclastic vasculitis and characterized by involvement of small vessels in skin, gastrointestinal system, joints, kidneys, and less frequently other organs. It is the commonest vasculitis in childhood and etiology is not completely known. Neurological manifestations of IgAV are very rare and usually seen in patients with severe hypertension or as an uncommon feature such as peripheral neuropathy. Posterior reversible enc...

Cortical neuromodulation for neuropathic pain and Parkinson disease: Where are we?
Publication date: Available online 13 November 2017 Source:Neurologia i Neurochirurgia Polska Author(s): Angelo Lavano, Giusy Guzzi, Domenico Chirchiglia Cortex neuromodulation is promising approach for treatment of some neurological conditions, especially neuropathic pain and Parkinson's disease. Effects of non-invasive cortical stimulation are short lived; transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) may be useful to assess the suitability for invasive cortical stimulation. Direct cortical stimulation (DCS) is the method able to provide long-lasting effects i...

Publication date: Available online 9 November 2017 Source:Neurologia i Neurochirurgia Polska Author(s): Piotr Janik, Natalia Szejko Aripiprazole is a dopamine D2- and serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)1A receptor partial agonist and 5-HT2A receptor antagonist primarily used for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or depression with psychotic ideation. However, recently a number of new possible indications have been suggested, among them Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). In two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies in children and adolescents with GTS has been confirmed the efficacy of ...

A case with CMTX1 disease showing transient ischemic-attack-like episodes
We describe a 15-year-old male patient with CMTX1 who had stroke-like findings along with foot deformities and peripheral neuropathy. Strokes and stroke-like attacks are rarely seen in children and adolescents. Herein, neurological signs, MRI findings and genetic results of a CMTX1 case are presented and discussed.
