Supporting doctor-patient communication: Providing a question prompt list and audio recording of the consultation as communication aids to outpatients in a cancer clinic
Evidence based medicine is the cornerstone of medical treatment and it is argued that real evidence based medicine should include sharing decisions with patients through meaningful conversation [1]. Shared decision making (SDM) is defined by Charles et al. as involving at least two participants (the physician and patient) that both share information, take steps to build a consensus about the preferred treatment, and agree on the treatment to be implemented [2]. One of the assumptions underlying SDM is that the information is provided in a way that is understandable and adapted to the individual patients ’ need [3]. (Sour...

Development and evaluation of the Communication over Language Barriers questionnaire (CoLB-q) in paediatric healthcare
Dealing with language barriers and the use of interpreters in the healthcare sector is a growing challenge worldwide. The right to express oneself and receive information is proclaimed in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [1]. Furthermore, national legislations in countries such as Norway, Australia and Sweden [2 –4] state that patients are entitled to individually adapted information to be able to participate in decisions concerning their care. Interpreters are thus crucial to meet the information needs of patients/families with limited language proficiency in the majority language. (Source: Patien...

Why do doctors not learn how to explain “medically unexplained symptoms”?
Physical symptoms not readily understood as “organic” are quite common among patients in many subfields of healthcare and may represent a reason for as many as 25–50% of all visits to general practitioners [1]. Such symptoms are often referred to as “medically unexplained symptoms” [2] or “functional somatic syndromes” [3]. Thes e symptoms represent a challenge for health care practitioners in many different ways. Communication between doctors and patients with subjective symptoms without a well-defined organic explanation is often difficult. (Source: Patient Education and Counseling)

Helping patients help themselves: Supporting the healthcare journey
Patients often feel lost when navigating the health care system, and poor care coordination leads to negative patient outcomes, consumes resources and makes diseases more difficult to treat. Patients and citizens have become eager to take health care decision making into their own hands. To this end, solutions have been proposed which assist patients by providing them with more information and enabling them to take a more active role in their care. These include enlisting a patient navigator, consumer engagement, process mapping, decision aids, and clinical pathways. (Source: Patient Education and Counseling)
