Development and evaluation of the Communication over Language Barriers questionnaire (CoLB-q) in paediatric healthcare

Dealing with language barriers and the use of interpreters in the healthcare sector is a growing challenge worldwide. The right to express oneself and receive information is proclaimed in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [1]. Furthermore, national legislations in countries such as Norway, Australia and Sweden [2 –4] state that patients are entitled to individually adapted information to be able to participate in decisions concerning their care. Interpreters are thus crucial to meet the information needs of patients/families with limited language proficiency in the majority language.
