Sustained vigilance and errors in critical care
Abstract: In an effort to better understand the relationship between fatigue and error in the clinical practice environment, a sample of critical care RNs was surveyed to assess their scores on fatigue, sleep quality, stress, and errors. There were statistically significant correlations between a nurse's self-reported skill and errors, stress level and errors, and fatigue and errors. These findings point to the need for further quantitative research in the realm of nursing-care environments that may promote error. (Source: Nursing Critical Care)

A procalcitonin-guided algorithm to reduce antibiotic duration
Abstract: With the rise in antimicrobial resistance, it is imperative that healthcare providers monitor and regulate antibiotic therapy more closely. Antimicrobial resistance can lead to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditures. Current research suggests a procalcitonin-guided algorithm can assist healthcare providers in deciding the appropriate antibiotic therapy duration in critical care patients with sepsis. Utilizing this algorithm in practice can reduce unnecessarily lengthy antibiotic durations, improve patient outcomes, and decrease hospital length of stay and expenditures.
