Sustained vigilance and errors in critical care

Abstract: In an effort to better understand the relationship between fatigue and error in the clinical practice environment, a sample of critical care RNs was surveyed to assess their scores on fatigue, sleep quality, stress, and errors. There were statistically significant correlations between a nurse's self-reported skill and errors, stress level and errors, and fatigue and errors. These findings point to the need for further quantitative research in the realm of nursing-care environments that may promote error.
