Experiences of Singapore nurses as second victims: A qualitative study
Abstract Nurses, like other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, pharmacists, and therapists, are susceptible to unanticipated patient harm, in which they suffer as second victims due to the immense personal and professional impact from the adverse event. The aim of the present study was to explore the psychological responses, coping strategies, and support needs of Singapore nurses as second victims of adverse events. A descriptive qualitative study was adopted. Eight participants (6 women and 2 men) who had been involved in an adverse event were interviewed and audio‐recorded. Thematic analysis was performed t...

Influencing factors in quantitative measurement using activated platelet levels and platelet ‐activating capacity for the assessment of thrombosis in pre‐metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus
Abstract Activated platelet levels and platelet‐activating capacity are well recognized as useful index parameters for the physiological and pharmacological prediction of thrombotic events. Recently, quantitative measurements for platelet functions using a flow cytometer have been increasing gradually. However, the relation of physiological factors, such as sex, aging, and laboratory tests, to platelet functions has not been well documented. We conducted a blood analysis of people with normal/pre‐metabolic syndrome and patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus to clarify the pathological factors. The levels of basal (non...

Relationship of nurses ’ intrapersonal characteristics with work performance and caring behaviors: A cross‐sectional study
This study aimed to describe intrapersonal characteristics (professional values, personality, empathy, and job involvement), work performance as perceived by nurses, and caring behaviors as perceived by patients, and to examine the relationships among these variables. A cross‐sectional design was employed. A sample was recruited of 218 nurses and 116 patients in four private hospitals and four public hospitals. Data were collected using self‐report measures. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, hierarchical linear modelling, correlations, and structural equation m...

Respiratory characteristics of individuals with non ‐specific low back pain: A cross‐sectional study
In this study, we investigated alterations in breathing, respiratory strength and endurance, core stability, diaphragm mobility, and chest expansion among patients with NS‐LBP and healthy individuals. The specific aim of the study was to correlate between respiratory function and other variables among NS‐LBP patients. Thirty four patients with NS‐LBP were matched with 34 healthy participants before undergoing total faulty breathing scale, spirometer, respiratory pressure meter, chest expansion, ultrasound, and pressure biofeedback measurements. There were signs of faulty breathing in the NS‐LBP patients when compar...

Cultural factors influencing Japanese nurses ’ assertive communication. Part 1: Collectivism
Abstract Culture influences the way health‐care professionals communicate with each other and their ability to relate to colleagues in an assertive manner. Cultural barriers can also make it difficult for nurses to speak up even when they have concerns about patient safety. An understanding of the potential impact of cultural factors is therefore needed when developing assertiveness communication training programs. This paper presents the findings from a study that explored Japanese nurses’ perceptions of how culture and values impact assertive communication in health care. Semistructured interviews with 23 registered ...

Effects of adverse events in health care on acute care nurses in an Australian context: A qualitative study
Abstract Adverse events in health care significantly impact health professionals who become the second victims of medical error. The aim of the present study was to understand the effects of adverse events in health care on nurses in acute health‐care settings in an Australian context. In this qualitative, descriptive study, we used purposeful sampling and recruited 10 acute care nurses. Interviews were conducted from 2011 to 2012 and were recorded, transcribed, and returned to participants to verify their accuracy. Data were categorized and analyzed to determine four emergent themes and subthemes. The four themes were: ...

Transformative effects of Aboriginal health placements for medical, nursing, and allied health students: A systematic review
Abstract The aim of the present systematic review was to investigate whether placements in Aboriginal health affect the self‐perceived skill in working in Aboriginal health settings and career aspirations of health students, and in particular, aspects of the placement that had the greatest impact. The Embase, Cinahl, ProQuest, Scopus, Informit, Ovid MEDLINE, PsychINFO, and PubMed databases were searched in April/May 2016. Placements of at least 1 week duration in an Aboriginal health setting involving Australian students of medical, nursing, dentistry, or allied health disciplines, with outcomes relating to changes in ...

Nurses ’ competence in genetics: An integrative review
Abstract The aim of this integrative review was to update a mixed method systematic review by Skirton, O'Connor, and Humphreys (2012) that reported on nurses’ levels of competence in using genetics in clinical practice. Three electronic databases were searched using selected key words. Research studies published in English between January 2011 and September 2017 reporting levels of nurse competence in genetics or genomics were eligible for inclusion. The selected studies were subjected to thematic analysis. Three main themes were identified: (i) genomic knowledge and utilization, (ii) perceived relevance to practice, and...
