Burden among caregivers of children living with human immunodeficiency virus in North India
Conclusions: Caring of children is a universal practice but there is a need of special care for children living with HIV. The majority of caregivers who were usually the mothers perceived the burden and need to be assisted in caring for the child. Stigma and discrimination with HIV infection further increased the burden as caregivers did not disclose the HIV status to any near and dear one. (Source: North American Journal of Medical Sciences)

Drug-induced pancreatitis: A rare manifestation of doxycycline administration

A Rare case of single coronary artery with atherosclerotic lesions arising from the right sinus of Valsalva
Conclusion: We present an extremely rare case of a SCA, with the solitary vessel arising from the right sinus of Valsalva. In our patient's case, the atherosclerotic lesions and occlusion in the branch supplying the anterior wall were considered eligible for neither percutaneous intervention nor bypass graft surgery. Evaluation series on safety and efficacy of nutritional supplements in newly diagnosed hyperglycemia: A placebo-controlled, randomized study
Conclusions: Nearly 1% point reduction in HbA1c at week 12 with PreCrea ® is comparable with most first-line glucose-lowering drugs. The safety and tolerability of PreCrea ® highlights its potential as a first-line therapy in newly detected hyperglycemia. (Source: North American Journal of Medical Sciences)

Can radiology play a role in early diagnosis of dengue fever?
Conclusion: Ultrasound findings of hepatosplenomegaly, GB wall edema, right-sided or bilateral pleural effusion, and ascites in patients presenting with signs and symptoms of DF during an epidemic are virtually diagnostic of DF. There have been recent changing trends with hepatosplenomegaly being the more common manifestation, in comparison to ascites and GB wall edema. DF also has catastrophic effects in pregnancy such as oligohydramnios and intrauterine fetal demise. (Source: North American Journal of Medical Sciences)

Stress, burnout and coping strategies in preclinical medical students
Jawad Fares, Hayat Al Tabosh, Zein Saadeddin, Christopher El Mouhayyar, Hussam AridiNorth American Journal of Medical Sciences 2016 8(2):75-81It is acknowledged that physicians do not seek the same expert aid for themselves as they would offer their patients. In their preclinical years, medical students appear to espouse comparable behavior. To many, medicine is described as a never-ending path that places the student under heavy stress and burnout from the beginning, leaving him/her vulnerable and with insufficient coping methods. Hence, the objective of this study is to 1) explore the prevalence of stress and burnout amo...

Laparoscopic repair of bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia in adults
Norman Oneil MachadoNorth American Journal of Medical Sciences 2016 8(2):65-74Bochdalek hernia (BH) is an uncommon form of diaphragmatic hernia. The rarity of this hernia and its nonspecific presentation leads to delay in the diagnosis, with the potential risk of complications. This review summarizes the relevant aspects of its presentation and management, based on the present evidence in the literature. A literature search was performed on PubMed, Google Scholar, and EMBASE for articles in English on BH in adults. All case reports and series from the period after 1955 till January 2015 were included. A total of 180 articl...

Breathless at the point of a sword
Conclusion: Scimitar syndrome is a very rare congenital anomaly of pulmonary venous return. It is usually diagnosed in early childhood but the diagnosis may be delayed until later in adulthood. The consequences are pulmonary hypertension, right-sided heart failure, and frequent pulmonary infections resulting in increased morbidity, mortality, and frequent doctor visits for otherwise healthy young patients. Ocular adnexal lymphoma presenting with visual loss
Conclusion: Because of the significant rate of disseminated disease among patients with lymphomas in the orbit that carries a worse prognosis, early diagnosis is essential to promote better overall survival of these patients. We describe here a patient diagnosed with conjunctival lymphoma associated with pronounced visual loss and review the literature on this subject. (Source: North American Journal of Medical Sciences)
