The effects of dog-appeasing pheromone spray upon canine vocalizations and stress-related behaviors in a rescue shelter
Exposure to dog-appeasing pheromones (DAPs) has been suggested to reduce stress-related behaviors in dogs; however, the effects of DAP administered using a portable, rapid use spray has not received as much attention as the plug-in format. The aim of the present study was to determine whether DAP spray reduced stress-related behaviors in rescue shelter dogs (Canis familiaris). Barking intensity, frequency of barking, and stress-related behaviors in the presence of a stressor were recorded using a repeated measures design with and without the use of spray pheromones. Sleeping patterns of horses in selected local horse stables in Malaysia
Horses typically spend between from 4 to 15  hours a day in standing rest and anywhere from minutes to several hours lying down. Horses that have less sleep due to prolonged activities will result in health deterioration and poor welfare. From the literature search and from the authors' knowledge, the study on the sleeping patterns of domest icated horses in stable management in the tropics has not yet been explored. Thus, the aim of this study was to understand the sleeping patterns of selected local stabled horses in Malaysia. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research)

Exotic pet suitability: Understanding some problems and using a labeling system to aid animal welfare, environment, and consumer protection
Exotic pets are essentially animals that are non-native to a region and/or nondomesticated. The trade in and keeping of exotic pets has been frequently criticized for the commonly inhumane and harmful practices that are associated with supply and keeping, including animal welfare, species conservation, invasiveness, and public health and safety. Relatedly, a growing issue is that of unwanted exotic pets handed to animal care centers due to their overly demanding requirements and the confiscation of animals suffering from abuse. Fatal dog attacks in Spain under a breed-specific legislation: A ten-year retrospective study
Forensic evaluation of fatal dog attacks requires interdisciplinary teams where veterinarians testify with forensic pathologists and odontologists to provide information about the circumstances of the attack, examine the scene, and study the autopsy of the victim or animal. In Spain, there is a shortage of scientific studies focused on dog bites and fewer studies on fatal attacks. The aim of this study is to use a multidisciplinary approach to review fatal dog maulings that occurred in Spain over a 10-year period. I say thee “neigh”: Rescued equids are optimistic in a judgment bias test
Changes in the affective state of neglected or abused animals can be difficult to quantify relative to physical improvements following rescue. Judgment bias as a measure of affective state was assessed in 8 horses and 2 donkeys that differed in their care history (abused/neglected or nonabused/non-neglected, hereafter described as rescued/nonrescued). On each training trial, a single bucket was presented at 1 of 2 locations; one that always contained food (reward) and another that never contained food (nonreward), and the latency to approach within 1 m of the bucket was recorded. Livestock handling and road transport influence some oxidative stress parameters in ewes
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of shearing and road transport on reactive oxygen species (dROMs), antioxidant barrier (Oxy-ads) and thiol antioxidant barrier (SHp) concentration in healthy Comisana ewes. Thirty animals were divided into three equal Groups: Group A was used as the control, Group B was shorn and Group C was transported by road for 6 hours. From animals of experimental groups (Groups B and C), blood samples were collected before (T0) and immediately after (T1) the shearing and/or road transport procedures, and 24 (T2) and 48 (T3) hours from the end of each procedure. Effect of density and relative aggressiveness on agonistic and affiliative interactions in a newly formed group of horses
This study focused on agonistic and affiliative interactions in a focal group of (originally) 12 horses with short and longer term changes in composition, variation in available area and presence of peri-parturient mares. Age and density had no significant effect on agonistic or affiliative behavior. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research)

An opportunistic pilot study of radiographs of equine nasal bones at the usual site of nosebands
This study evaluates archived radiographs of equine nasal bones for evidence of trauma and to test whether age, sex or breed were risk factors for such radiographic changes. Radiographs of equine nasal bones (n=60) were studied for evidence of bony or soft-tissue changes by a specialist radiologist blinded to their signalment. Horses with described changes were classified as possible cases and horses without changes, non-cases. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research)
