Practices and perceptions of clicker use in dog training: A survey-based investigation of dog owners and industry professionals
Clicker training is an animal training technique derived from mechanized, laboratory-based studies of animal learning. However, clicker training in the ‘real world’ often takes place with a human trainer in an environment that is not as well-controlled as a laboratory. Attempts to empirically evaluate applied clicker training techniques using testing protocols adapted from laboratory-based studies have been largely unsuccessful in replicating t he learning benefits seen in laboratory animals. One proposed explanation for these inconsistencies is that methods used in the scientific evaluation of clicker training, and me...

Hauliers' perceptions and attitudes towards farm animal welfare could influence the operational and logistics practices in sheep transport
A survey of Mexico-based sheep hauliers was conducted in order to investigate perceptions and attitudes toward farm animal welfare (FAW) and their influence on operational and logistic practices (OLPs) in sheep transportation. The statistical analysis consisted in the application of 2-factor analyses (OLP and animal welfare attitudes), additionally a cluster analysis; the latter allowed a segmentation of hauliers according to their attitudes and OLP. The factor analysis gave 3 OLP factors: logistic issues, economic losses, and welfare losses. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research)

Maternal and neonatal behavior as affected by maternal nutrition during prepartum and postpartum period in indigenous sheep
This study was conducted to evaluate the maternal –filial behavior of native breeds given concentrate supplementation, prepartum and postpartum, and outcomes for their crossed Dorper lambs. A total of 52 crossbreed lambs from 36 hair ewes, 20 Santa Ines (SI), and 16 Morada Nova (MN), crossed with a Dorper ram were distributed in a completely rand omized design in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with 2 breeds (MN and SI) and 2 treatments (0.5% and 1.5% of concentrate supplementation based on body weight). Potential role for selenium in the pathophysiology of crib-biting behavior in horses
Crib-biting is a repetitive and compulsive behavior that is characterized by “grasping a fixed object with incisor teeth and aspirating air with an audible grunt.” Little is known about etiology and pathophysiology of crib-biting behavior in horses. Previously, we have shown that oxidative stress is linked to crib-biting, with crib-biters showing lower antioxidant capaci ty than non–crib-biting horses. The aim of the present study was to extend our understanding of oxidative stress in crib-biting to determine the serum contents of some mineral trace elements (manganese [Mn], magnesium [Mg], selenium [Se], copper [Cu]...

A study of pica in cattle in Iran
This study was conducted to evaluate serum variations of some electrolyte, mineral and protein factors in cattle with pica. After history taking and clinical examination, of the 285 referred native cows, 15 with an ongoing history of pica were included as the pica group. Fifteen healthy-looking cows without pica were randomly chosen as the control. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research)

Contexts and consequences of dog bite incidents
Dog bites are a contentious issue within the United Kingdom due to their effect on public health and increasing incidence. Despite multiple expert-led dog bite prevention schemes being available, there is limited evidence regarding the surrounding factors and likely causes of a dog bite (e.g., dog/human behaviour). An online convenience sample questionnaire was distributed through social media between December 2015 and February 2016 targeting self-identified dog bite victims within the UK. A total of 484 responses were received. (Source: Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research)

This study was conducted to evaluate the maternal-filial behavior of native breeds given concentrate supplementation, pre- and postpartum, and outcomes for their crossed Dorper lambs. A total of 52 crossbreed lambs from thirty-six hair ewes, 20 Santa In ês (SI) and 16 Morada Nova (MN), crossed with a Dorper ram were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with two breeds (MN and SI) and two treatments (0.5 and 1.5% of concentrate supplementation based on body weight). Stereotypic behavior is not limited to terrestrial taxa: A response to Rose et  al.
This comment is in response to a recent review of stereotypical behavior in captive exotic animals (Rose et  al., 2017). Negative stereotypical behavior occurs across most if not all taxa, including notable aquatic invertebrates. A useful discussion of animal suffering cannot occur if we continue to ignore phylogenetically distant animals, especially when relevant information is becoming more easily avai lable. Those interested in animal welfare and suffering must devise a plan and means to ensure all taxa are represented in such surveys and in the literature and that their behaviors are assessed in ways meaningful to the...

Behavior of lambs at different ages during brief periods of increased sensorial isolation from their mothers
To determine the behavior of different-aged lambs during short periods of increased sensorial isolation from their mothers, 60 ewe-lamb pairs were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: “C”, intact lambs that remained with their mothers; “A”, lambs with restricted auditory capacity; “A+V”, lambs with restricted auditory and visual capacities; “A+V+W”, lambs with restricted auditory and visual capacities plus separation from their mothers by an open wire mesh; and, “ A+V+S”, lambs with restricted auditory and visual capacities plus separation from their mothers by a solid wall. Approaching phantom complex after limb amputation in the canine species
The objective of this study was to describe the presence, prevalence, clinical manifestations and risk factors of phantom complex (PC) and its effect on the quality of life for dogs that underwent amputation of a limb. An online questionnaire was developed containing three sections with a total of 69 questions. Clinical cases were recruited from a website for three-legged dog owners. Data were acquired from February to March 2015. Descriptive statistics and frequency distribution analyses were performed on the collected data. The use of trazodone to facilitate calm behavior after elective orthopedic surgery in dogs: Results and lessons learned from a  clinical trial
Trazodone hydrochloride is an atypical antidepressant that has entered clinical use for dogs and cats for a variety of indications. These include management of anxiety disorders, facilitation of travel and veterinary examinations, and facilitation of calm behavior in hospitalized and postoperative patients. Despite the increasingly common use of trazodone in dogs, very little literature exists evaluating trazodone's efficacy against a placebo control. The aim of the study reported here was to evaluate trazodone in a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial for use in facilitating calmness and ease of confinement in pos...

Mirror reflection or real image: Does past mirror experience influence a dog's use of a mirror?
Dogs can use a mirror appropriately to solve a task, but their response seems to depend on their habituation to the mirror beforehand. It seems that there is a relationship between behavior in looking at a mirror and the ability to use the mirror, but the interaction between the presence of a person and the time dogs spend looking in the mirror when confronted with a task has not been reported. Our aim was to investigate 2 factors: the dog's response to a person's reflection in a mirror or to the real person positioned in the same apparent position as the reflection as well as the time spent by the dog looking in the mirro...
