Sensitivity of Parasitological Tests in Imported Plasmodium vivax Malaria in Adults and Impact of Chemoprophylaxis and Attack Type
ConclusionsThis study illustrates the difficulties encountered in vivax malaria diagnosis, especially in patients who properly followed chemoprophylaxis or with primary infection due to a lower parasitemia. It underlines the lack of sensitivity of RDT for P. vivax and emphasizes the need for systematically combining various diagnosis methods. (Source: Journal of Travel Medicine)

Imported Malaria in Poland 2003 to 2011: Implications of Different Travel Patterns
ConclusionsTourists and work‐related travelers make up most of the malaria patients in Poland and they are at a greater risk of the severe form of malaria and consequently death, possibly due to the lack of immunity. Delayed diagnosis is associated with mortality, implying low awareness of the threat that malaria poses, both among patients and doctors. (Source: Journal of Travel Medicine)

Travel Health Risk Perceptions and Preparations Among Travelers at Hong Kong International Airport
Abstract Four levels of pre‐travel health preparations were defined to allow the measurement of general travel health preparations by the traveling public. A cross‐sectional survey of 770 travelers using Hong Kong International Airport was conducted. Important gaps were found in the self‐preparation domain. Length of travel was the only factor associated with higher levels of health preparations after adjusting for potential confounders. Targeted health education should be considered to improve health risk perceptions among travelers in Hong Kong and other similar metropolitan cities that are critical hubs for commer...

Three Cases of Imported Dengue Virus Infection From Madeira to Belgium, 2012
We report three laboratory‐confirmed dengue virus (DENV) infections imported to Belgium by travelers returning from Madeira (Portugal). Despite the use of a mosquito‐repellent spray as reported by two patients, the infection could not be prevented. Diagnosis was made by antigen detection and real‐time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR) in two cases and by serology 1 month after onset of symptoms in a third one. The responsible virus was identified as DENV serotype 1, American/African genotype (genotype V). The close relationship to isolates from Colombia supports the previous findings that a...
