Living proof and the pseudoscience of alternative cancer treatments.
In conclusion, a highly publicized book gives the impression that alternative cancer treatments are supported by scientific research. It also suggests that little progress has been made in the conventional treatment of myeloma. This is highly misleading and may lead to cancer patients rejecting effective treatments. Restorative yoga for women with ovarian or breast cancer: findings from a pilot study.
Authors: Danhauer SC, Tooze JA, Farmer DF, Campbell CR, McQuellon RP, Barrett R, Miller BE Abstract Yoga has demonstrated benefit in healthy individuals and those with various health conditions. There are, however, few systematic studies to support the development of yoga interventions for cancer patients. Restorative yoga (RY) is a gentle type of yoga that has been described as "active relaxation." The specific aims of this pilot study were to determine the feasibility of implementing an RY intervention as a supportive therapy for women diagnosed with ovarian or breast cancer and to measure changes in sel...

Expressive writing as a presurgical stress management intervention for breast cancer patients.
This study evaluated whether expressive writing (EW) was an effective stress management intervention for breast cancer patients. Women were recruited at the end of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and assigned to write about their cancer experience (EW group; n = 24) or neutral topics (neutral writing [NW] group; n = 25). Women were asked to write for 20 minutes a day for a total of four writing sessions that were completed over a 7-day period. Participants were reassessed approximately 3 days before and 2 weeks after surgery. The intervention did not significantly decrease women's distress, perceived stress, sleep disturbance, or...

Imagery intervention for recovering breast cancer patients: clinical trial of safety and efficacy.
Authors: Freeman L, Cohen L, Stewart M, White R, Link J, Palmer JL, Welton D Abstract In a phase I National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded clinical trial, 34 breast cancer survivors, six weeks to one year post-treatment, were recruited to participate in a 6-class, 8-week long imagery stress reduction program entitled "Envision the Rhythms of Life." Patients practiced imagery during and between sessions. Outcomes for quality of life and cortisol rhythm were assessed pre- to post-intervention, in two subsets of survivors (intravenous [IV] chemotherapy, or no IV chemotherapy). Thirty survivors completed the 8-...

Music therapy in a comprehensive cancer center.
Authors: Richardson MM, Babiak-Vazquez AE, Frenkel MA Abstract The use of music as a therapeutic tool in health and medicine dates back to ancient times. In modern Western medicine, music therapy has been available since the 1950s and is now often incorporated into conventional medicine care. Music therapy is a common modality that is used in hospital settings as part of complementary and integrative medicine programs. It is also a key therapeutic tool used within most integrative medicine programs at large cancer centers in the United States. When used in conjunction with conventional cancer treatments, m...

Basic introduction to research: how not to do research.
Authors: Vickers AJ Abstract In this didactic article, I review some prevalent "myths" about clinical research: anyone can do research; you can learn how to do research from a book or journal articles; all you need to do statistics is the right software (although Excel will also do); you can do good-quality research at your kitchen sink; and what is important is that you did your best. These myths appear to be particularly prevalent in the complementary and alternative medicine communities. They are based on a clear double standard: most clinicians would express shock and horror at the very thought that so...

Healing touch as a supportive intervention for adult acute leukemia patients: a pilot investigation of effects on distress and symptoms.
CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible to recruit patients hospitalized for acute leukemia to a study of HT. Preliminary data on short-term improvements in symptoms indicate these are promising outcomes for future study. Patient satisfaction with quality of life as a prognostic indicator in ovarian cancer patients treated in an integrative treatment setting.
This study evaluated the association between QLI and survival in ovarian cancer. We examined a consecutive case series of 90 patients with histologically confirmed stage I-IV ovarian cancer treated at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. QLI measures overall QoL and QoL in four major subscales: Health and Physical, Social and Economic, Psychological and Spiritual, and Family. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate survival. Multivariate Cox regression analyses were then performed to evaluate the joint prognostic significance of QoL and clinical factors. The Health and Physical subscale was marginally statistically s...

Evaluation of active hexose correlated compound hepatic metabolism and potential for drug interactions with chemotherapy agents.
The objective of this study was to characterize AHCC hepatic metabolism, specifically involving the potential for drug interactions with selected chemotherapy agents. High-throughput cytochrome P-450 (CYP450) metabolism inhibition experiments were conducted in vitro evaluating CYP450 3A4, 2C8, 2C9, and 2D6 followed by an evaluation of AHCC as a substrate of these same isoenzymes. An ex vivo model of cryopreserved human hepatocytes was used to evaluate the CYP450 metabolism induction potential of AHCC for CYP450 3A4, 2C8/2C9, and 2D6. No inhibition of CYP450 activity was observed in presence of AHCC; however, AHCC was a sub...

Immune defects in breast cancer patients after radiotherapy.
Authors: Standish LJ, Torkelson C, Hamill FA, Yim D, Hill-Force A, Fitzpatrick A, Olsen M, Schildt S, Sweet E, Wenner CA, Martzen MR Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immune status of women with stage I-III breast cancer after receiving external beam radiotherapy (RT). Fourteen stage I-III, estrogen or progesterone receptor-positive or-negative (FER/PR +\-), postsurgical breast cancer patients undergoing a standard course of chemotherapy and radiation were studied. Complete blood counts (CBC) with differential, phagocytic activity, natural killer (NK) cell functional activity, and tumo...

Trametes versicolor mushroom immune therapy in breast cancer.
Authors: Standish LJ, Wenner CA, Sweet ES, Bridge C, Nelson A, Martzen M, Novack J, Torkelson C Abstract Data from multiple epidemiologic and clinical studies on immune effects of conventional cancer treatment and the clinical benefits of polysaccharide immune therapy suggest that immune function has a role in breast cancer prevention. Immune therapy utilizing the polysaccharide constituents of Trametes versicolor (Tv) as concurrent adjuvant cancer therapy may be warranted as part of a comprehensive cancer treatment and secondary prevention strategy.
