Prescribing Opioids as an Incentive to  Retain Patients in Medical Care: A Qualitative Investigation into Clinician Awareness and Perceptions
HIV treatment retention remains a significant public health concern. Our qualitative analysis used emergent data from a larger HIV treatment study to explore clinician perspectives on prescribing opioids to incentivize retention in HIV care. Data from individual interviews with 29 HIV and substance use clinicians were analyzed using thematic analysis. Prescribing opioids as a retention strategy emerged as a theme. Nine of 11 HIV clinicians reported prior knowledge of this practice; only one of 12 substance use clinicians indicated prior knowledge. (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)

Nurses ’ knowledge of tuberculosis, HIV, and integrated HIV/TB care policies in rural Western Cape, South Africa
HIV and tuberculosis (TB) co-infection remain the leading causes of mortality in many developing countries. Several policies for their prevention and management exist; however, progress to meet the World Health Organization ’s indicators is slow. As nurses in rural areas are the main health care professionals responsible for the implementation of policies, questions arose about nursing knowledge regarding TB and HIV policies. A concurrent mixed method research approach was used to investigate this issue in a rural ar ea of the Western Cape in South African. (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)

Why do young Hispanic women take sexual risks? Psychological and cultural factors for HIV prevention
Young Hispanic women have been particularly affected by HIV. For this reason, we analyzed the influence of cognitive factors, dispositional variables, and gender culture on the HIV risks of 2 groups of Hispanic women. Young Argentinian and Spanish women (N = 342) completed the AIDS Prevention Questionnaire, the Spanish version of the Sexual Compulsivity Scale, and the Spanish version of the Sexual Sensation Seeking Scale in order to evaluate knowledge of HIV transmission, HIV, and condom use; self-efficacy; safe-sex intention and safe sex; as well as Sexual Sensation Seeking and Sexual Compulsivity traits. Symptomatic Sexually Transmitted Infections in Brazil's Emerging Rural Populations
We used a cross-sectional study in 2011 to estimate prevalence and risk behaviors for self-reported symptomatic sexually transmitted infections (STI) in rural settlers in Midwestern Brazil. There were 353 individuals recruited who had been living in the settlement for more than 6  months. The endpoint variable was having reported vaginal discharge, urethral discharge, genital ulcers, or anogenital warts in the previous 12 months. Univariate and multivariate Poisson regressions were performed to identify STI correlates. (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)

HIV testing and associated factors among men who have sex with men in Changsha, China
Promoting HIV testing is an important strategy to end the HIV epidemic. HIV incidence among men who have sex with men (MSM) has increased rapidly in China in recent years, but HIV testing rates are still low. Our cross-sectional study investigated HIV testing rates and analyzed associated factors in 565 MSM in Changsha between April and December 2014. In the previous year 37.7% of participants had not been tested, 38.2% had had 1 test, and 24.1% had had 2 or more tests. Those who initiated sexual debut at an older age, had known someone infected with HIV, or been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted illness (STI) were mor...

President's Message
Earlier this year the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) joined 96 other organizations to sign a letter written by the American Academy of Nursing urging congressional leaders to develop a bipartisan National Commission on Mass Shootings (American Academy of Nursing, 2018). The letter urged government leaders to address the issue of access and availability of guns, and strengthen the screening process for individuals who wished to obtain weapons. Gun violence is a public health issue, with more than 60,000 gun-related injuries or deaths occurring in the United States last year (Gun Violence Archive, 2018). (Source: ...
