Developmental and self-related vulnerability factors in relationship-centered obsessive compulsive disorder symptoms: A moderated mediation model
Publication date: Available online 2 April 2019Source: Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related DisordersAuthor(s): Ezgi Trak, Mujgan InozuAbstractPrevious studies have indicated that high parental overprotection and insecure attachment patterns are associated with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Moreover, self-worth depending on different domains have been held partly responsible for the occurrence and persistence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in related domains. The present study examines how overprotective parental attitudes relates to the endorsement of relationship-centered obsessive thinking through attachment a...

Animal models of OCD-relevant processes: An RDoC perspective
Publication date: Available online 3 April 2019Source: Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related DisordersAuthor(s): Christopher Pittenger, Helen Pushkarskaya, Patricia GrunerAbstractAnimal models have been invaluable tools in deciphering pathophysiology in many branches of medicine. Their application in the study of complex neuropsychiatric conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), however, raises vexing interpretative challenges. The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) approach of identifying dimensions of function and dysfunction that cut across syndromic diagnoses provides one potential path forward. We rev...

The role of ethnic identity in OC symptom dimensions among Asian Americans
This study is the first to demonstrate an exacerbating function of ethnic identity for OC symptoms among Asian Americans, contrary to some previous evidence of its protective role for overall mental health among ethnoracial minorities. More research is needed to test and validate hypotheses about why ethnic identity mediated group differences in OC symptoms. (Source: Journal of Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders)

Metacognition in obsessive-compulsive disorder symptom dimensions: Role of fusion beliefs, beliefs about rituals and stop signals
This study aimed at investigating the applicability of the model in OCD symptom dimensions. Participants completed a web-based survey comprising multiple questionnaires to assess their OCD symptom dimensions, OCD-specific metacognitions, and their general metacognitions and worries. Of the 276 total respondents who completed the survey, 227 met A- and B-self-rating-criteria of the DSM-5 (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) regarding OCD; these 227 participants made up the final sample. We analyzed the participants’ responses using regression models on each OCD symptom dimension to determine how much of the variance i...

Family accommodation and empathic responses to persons with obsessive-compulsive symptoms: the moderating effect of consideration of future consequences
DiscussionWhen professionals help decrease accommodation in families with low consideration of future consequences, it may be effective to incorporate self-regulation strategies. Although this study provided key insights into the relationship between families’ empathic responses and accommodation, and the moderating effect of consideration of future consequences, a replication study is needed because of the relatively small sample size. Psychometric Properties of the Hoarding Disorder-Dimensional Scale
Publication date: Available online 9 January 2019Source: Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related DisordersAuthor(s): Elizabeth A. Carey, Andrea del Pozo de Bolger, Bethany M. WoottonAbstractThe Hoarding Disorder-Dimensional Scale (HD-D) is a new measure of hoarding symptom severity developed by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (5th Edition) Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders Sub-workgroup. The aim of the current study was to assess the psychometric properties of this measure in a large, community sample. Five hundred and seventeen participants completed the study. Pinning Our Possessions: Associations between Digital Hoarding and Symptoms of Hoarding Disorder
Publication date: Available online 26 December 2018Source: Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related DisordersAuthor(s): Alexandria M. Luxon, C. Elizabeth Hamilton, Sage Bates, Gregory S. ChassonAbstractDigital hoarding may relate to characteristics of physical Hoarding Disorder (HD), but this has only been systematically investigated once before. To that end, a non-clinical sample of 101 Pinterest users completed measures of emotional state before and after an experimental manipulation involving deception in which they were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: being led to believe that one digital item or a group...

Validation of the Spanish version of the Fear of Self Questionnaire
In this study, we examined the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Fear of Self Questionnaire (FSQ) and analyzed the role of the fear of self (the sort of person we are afraid of becoming) as a predictor of OC beliefs and symptoms. A sample of 359 non-clinical participants completed a set of questionnaires, including the FSQ. Confirmatory factor analysis replicated the original one-factor solution for both the FSQ-8- and 20-item versions. The FSQ demonstrated excellent reliability, and fear of self predicted OC symptoms and cognitions, especially unacceptable obsessions. (Source: Journal of Obsessive Comp...

Anxiogenic Parenting Practices as Predictors of Pediatric Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors
Publication date: Available online 12 December 2018Source: Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related DisordersAuthor(s): Yolanda E. Murphy, Elle Brennan, Christopher FlessnerAbstractPediatric body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) demonstrate significant prevalence and impairment, yet their etiology is poorly understood. Addressing this limitation, the current study sought to explore the relationship between pediatric BFRBs (i.e. skin picking, hair pulling, nail biting, lip biting) and anxiogenic parenting (i.e. conflict, over involvement, accommodation, modeling, emotional warmth) - one potential factor in this patho...
