Combination of Mother Therapeutic Touch (MTT) and Maternal Voice Stimulus (MVS) therapies stabilize sleep and physiological function in preterm infants receiving minor invasive procedures
This study examines the effectiveness of Mother Therapeutic Touch (MTT) and Maternal Voice Stimulus (MVS) therapies for improving the sleep states and physiological function of preterm infants. Eighty-four infants who received minor invasive procedures were randomly allocated into four groups: (A) MTT, (B) MVS, (C) combined MTT + MVS, and (D) routine care. Concurrently, heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and oxygen saturation were measured using the multiple regression model of the generalized estimating equation (GEE) method. The MTT group showed the most stable sleep states, although this finding was not statistic...

Feeding swallowing difficulties in the first three years of life: A preterm and full-term infant comparison
ConclusionFSDs are relatively common in early childhood (27%) with GERD being the most reported by parents. Preterm birth is a significant predictor of FSDs. These findings further motivate the need for more research on FSDs in childhood. (Source: Journal of Neonatal Nursing)

Study on effects of steroid on clinical course, short-term and long-term outcomes in neonates with meconium aspiration syndrome
Publication date: Available online 17 July 2018Source: Journal of Neonatal NursingAuthor(s): Kriti Sundar Rana, Mithun Chandra Konar, Kamirul Islam, Kanai Lal Barik, Kaustav Nayek, Asok Kumar DattaAbstractThe definite role of steroids in meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), their safety and short-term as well as long-term outcomes are yet to be evaluated in large clinical trials; although some recent studies have yielded encouraging results. A randomized controlled trial was conducted over three years involving 275 neonates, where one group (n = 137) received intravenous (IV) methylprednisolone and nebulized budesonide ...

Dealing with parents' existential issues in neonatal intensive care
This study explores how hospital staff approach parents' existential issues. Thirty-two interviews with physicians, nurses, counsellors, psychologists and priests at four NICUs were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Physicians and nurses found it difficult to deal with the existential issues of parents. Some considered that it was not their job and referred parents to a counsellor or psychologist. However, counsellors and psychologists noted that many parents would rather speak to a physician or a nurse whom they were already familiar with. Several of the priests felt that their job included providing support fo...

Frequency, location and risk factors of neonatal skin injuries from mechanical forces of pressure, friction, shear and stripping: A systematic literature review
ConclusionNeonatal skin injuries from mechanical forces occur more frequently and differ in location from adults. Future studies need to identify modifiable risk factors and use consistent skin injury classifications applicable to neonates. (Source: Journal of Neonatal Nursing)

A review of breastfeeding training intervention studies that evaluate staff knowledge outcomes in NICU
ConclusionsThis review identified a lack of good quality evidence on the effectiveness of breastfeeding educational interventions for staff in NICU. Future research should address the breastfeeding education needs of multidisciplinary healthcare staff in NICU through large, well-conducted RCTs. (Source: Journal of Neonatal Nursing)

Publication date: Available online 10 November 2017Source: Journal of Neonatal NursingAuthor(s): Colette Cunningham, Zena Moore, D. Patton, T. O'Connor, Linda E. NugentAbstractThe aim of this systematic review is to ascertain if kangaroo care (KC) affects the weight of preterm/LBW infants in the neonatal setting of hospital environments. The following databases were searched: PubMed, The Cochrane Library, The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, Embase and SCOPUS. Preterm neurodevelopmental outcomes following orosensory entrainment intervention
Publication date: Available online 1 December 2017Source: Journal of Neonatal NursingAuthor(s): Diane Frome Loeb, Caitlin M. Imgrund, Jaehoon Lee, Steven M. BarlowAbstractPrevious research indicates that the NTrainer, a pressurized pacifier programmed to produce pulsed pneumotactile stimulation during gavage feeds, has been found to facilitate non-nutritive suck development and shorten the length of hospital stay when used in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Four groups of children, including infants of diabetic mothers (IDM), healthy controls (HI), and those with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), or chronic lun...

Down syndrome: An integrative review
Publication date: Available online 3 February 2018Source: Journal of Neonatal NursingAuthor(s): Katrina Diamandopoulos, Janet GreenAbstractDown syndrome is a complex genetic disorder resulting in three copies of chromosome 21. Babies with this genetic disorder will have recognisable characteristic facial features that will differ from one baby to another. They will also have some degree of cognitive impairment and learning difficulties. There are many medical conditions associated with Down syndrome, however, due to recent medical advances there have been improvements in their health and longevity. This has led to a rise i...

The effect of maternal participation in preterm's care and improved short-term growth and neurodevelopment outcomes
This study aimed to test the effectiveness of the Maternal Participation Program (MPP) on growth and neurobehavioral development of preterm infants. The hypothesis was that preterm infants whose mothers were in the experimental group demonstrated better growth and neurobehavioral development than the control group Double-blind randomized control trial evaluated 50 mothers whose preterm infants were hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit, a university hospital. Mothers were randomly assigned into two groups (experimental group = 25; control group = 25). The experimental group received the usual nursing car...
