Shell fragment aspiration seen at post-mortem computed tomography indicating drowning
Publication date: Available online 15 January 2015 Source:Journal of Forensic Radiology and Imaging Author(s): Stephan A. Bolliger , Steffen Ross , Ludovico Marino , Michael J. Thali , Wolf Schweitzer The diagnosis of death due to drowning may be difficult, especially in cases of advanced decomposition, as most findings indicative of drowning sought for during post-mortem imaging and autopsy become obscured. The detection of diatoms within the corpse may still allow for the diagnosis of drowning, even if all other findings have decomposed. Other particles found in natural bodies of water, especially near the shore...

Is there still a role for fetal and perinatal post-mortem radiography?
Publication date: Available online 24 December 2014 Source:Journal of Forensic Radiology and Imaging Author(s): O.J. Arthurs , A.D. Calder , W.M. Klein The fetal and perinatal autopsy has incorporated imaging for many years, usually skeletal radiographs, which can be diagnostically useful in the post-mortem setting. In fetal or perinatal post-mortem skeletal surveys (PMSS or ‘babygrams’), usually two whole-body radiographs are performed for the assessment of bone biometry, gestation estimation and congenital skeletal abnormalities. We outline the clinical settings and acquisition techniques involved, with partic...

CT scan images for sex discrimination – A preliminary study on Gujarati population
Conclusion Discriminant function for identification of sex was obtained with satisfactory accuracy rates for the parameters under study. It indicates that the skulls of Gujarati population are dimorphic enough to identify the sex of unknown skulls obtained from crime scene. (Source: Journal of Forensic Radiology and Imaging)

Distended diameter of the inferior vena cava is suggestive of pulmonary thromboembolism on unenhanced post-mortem CT
Conclusions This study revealed that increased diameter of the inferior vena cava is suggestive of pulmonary embolism on PMCT. However, other causes of right heart failure may also cause distension of the inferior vena cava. Further research is needed to enable a reliable distinction between cases of PE and MI. Cingolani The estimation of age of adult individuals usually employs methods based on age-related changes in the human skeleton. The main aim of this study was to assess dental age through analysis of images from peri-apical X-rays based on a new algorithm for automatic estimation of pulp and tooth area. The algorithm was tested on a sample of 40 canines of males and 30 of females from subjects between the ages of 20 and 7...
