The Stage of Obesity Epidemic Model: Learning from Tobacco Control and Advocacy for a Framework Convention on Obesity Control
Abstract The 2011 United Nations Political Declaration against noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) targeted 4 major risk factors: tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, an unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), MPOWER strategies, and the four‐stage model of tobacco epidemic are useful references for the prevention and control of other risk factors and NCDs. Obesity control is a more complex challenge involving two major risk factors: physical inactivity and unhealthy diet. We propose the Stage of Obesity Epidemic Model (SOEM) for the expanding epidemic. Obesity is at t...

Brain atrophy in middle ‐aged type 2 diabetes with and without microvascular complications
ConclusionsBrain atrophy is present in dementia‐free middle‐aged adults with T2DM. Regional brain atrophy appears to be developing even in subgroup that shows no clinical evidence of microvascular disturbances. The brain seems to be particularly vulnerable to metabolic disorders prior to peripheral microvascular pathologies associated with other target organs. (Source: Journal of Diabetes)

Diabetes and branched chain amino acids: What is the link?
Abstract The branched chain amino acids (BCAA) have increasingly been studied as playing a role in diabetes, with the PubMed search string “diabetes AND "branched chain amino acids"” showing particular growth in studies of the topic over the past decade (Figure). (Source: Journal of Diabetes)

The kidney and cardiovascular outcome trials
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects a substantial minority of people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Analysis of US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) datasets from 2007 through 2012 showed Stage 3 or worse disease (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] <60 mL/min per 1.73 m2) in nearly one in five patients, with increasing age, blood pressure, obesity, and levels of glycemia all associated with higher likelihood of Stage 3 or worse CKD, comparable to findings from surveys from many other areas, which also show micro‐ or macroalbuminuria to be present in one‐sixth to one‐third of diab...
