Five items differentiate mild to severe dementia from normal to minimal cognitive impairment—Using the Global Deterioration Scale
Conclusion We anticipate that our abridged GDS, composed of five items, will facilitate a rapid, yet effective assessment of patients in primary care centers. Its use will benefit both patients and medical professionals by minimizing the length of time required to conduct the assessment, and by allowing early diagnosis and care of patients. However, further research with a larger population is required to verify its efficacy. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics)

Retrospective analysis of efficacy and safety of third-line chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer among elderly patients receiving targeted therapy in early lines
Conclusion Third-line chemotherapy treatment of elderly MCRC patients was associated with a minor clinical response, a considerable number of side effects, but a longer survival rate. Third-line chemotherapy in fit elderly patients should be pursued, however, protocols must be adjusted before third-line treatment is implemented. A case of giant hiatal hernia in an elderly patient: When stomach, duodenum, colon, and pancreas slide into thorax
We report a case of an 88-year-old female who presented with 2-months of progressive shortness of breath. Upon arrival, the patient was found to be hypoxic with oxygen saturation 90% on room air. Physical examination also showed decreased breath sounds on left basal lungs and bilateral crackles at basal lungs. Plain radiograph demonstrated an increased opacity at the left lower lobe. Subsequent computerized tomography of the chest revealed a giant hiatal hernia, containing stomach, proximal duodenum, colon, and pancreas. This case highlights the giant hiatal hernia as an unusual cause of shortness of breath, especially in ...

Hypertension and its associated risks among Singapore elderly residential population
Conclusion The proportion of elderly with hypertension is high in this Asian population. What is of concern is the substantial proportion of undetected cases. This highlights the need for effective health screening among the elderly. Optimal control of BP in those diagnosed with hypertension is also a cause for concern, as identified in our study. Link between vitamin B12, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and bone mineral density in elderly patients
Conclusion The prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency was higher in the control group than the diabetic group who did not receive oral B12 supplementation. Low serum vitamin B12 is commonly overlooked in the elderly, with or without diabetes. The presence of diabetes mellitus did not affect BMD in the elderly. Furthermore, there is no significant relationship between serum vitamin B12 levels and BMD among diabetics. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics)
