Immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery: The rationale, implementation, and beliefs of ophthalmic surgeons across Europe
To assess the attitudes and beliefs held toward immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS), including estimating the incidence of European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) members currently performing ISBCS, exploring the barriers of ISBCS implementation, and assessing the relevance of these findings to practice in the United Kingdom. Precision pulse capsulotomy complicated by radial tear of the anterior capsule: a proposed mechanism
Zepto precision pulsed capsulotomy is an emerging technology aimed at providing a safer and more reproducible anterior capsulorhexis, with potential advantages in challenging cases. Initial reports suggest high safety, and thus far to our knowledge, no complications have been reported. Herein we report an unexpected complication. After the pulse delivery phase on a routine cataract case, a radial tear of the anterior capsule was observed. Upon careful review of the surgery video, an air bubble was noted, at the precise clock hour of the radial tear, trapped between the device wire and capsule. (Source: Journal of Cataract ...

Long-time outcome of cataract surgery – 20 year results from a population-based prospective study
Visual results 20 years after cataract surgery are excellent for the majority of patients, especially those less than 60 years, which is important when counseling younger patients requesting lens surgery. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

Immediately Sequential Bilateral Cataract Surgery: The rationale, implementation and beliefs of ophthalmic surgeons across Europe
Offering immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery is contentious. A survey was distributed to ESCRS members that reports their beliefs and attitudes. This should be used to inform future practice. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

Misdiagnosed opacification of a hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens
A 75-year-old woman was referred for decreased visual acuity resulting from “opacification of the IOL” in the immediate period after uneventful bilateral cataract surgery with single-piece AcrySof IQ intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. A neodymium:YAG laser capsulotomy had been performed in both eyes to treat the complication. Anterior segment optical coherence tomogra phy performed at presentation showed an opaque membrane enveloping the IOL. The membrane was peeled from the anterior IOL surface, and all adherences between the IOL and capsular bag were freed. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

Giant retinal tear and subretinal lens migration after complicated phacoemulsification
We report an unusual complication of phacoemulsification wherein an entire cataractous lens migrated through a giant retinal tear into the subretinal space. This case was managed successfully with pars plana vitrectomy and perfluorocarbon liquid –assisted phacofragmentation. To our knowledge, only a single case of a subretinal lens after phacoemulsification has been previously reported. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

Unveiling the “Opaque’ Hydrophobic Acrylic Intraocular Lens
A 75-year-old lady was referred having previously undergone uncomplicated cataract surgery with AcrySof single piece intraocular lens (IOL) with worsening visual acuity in the immediate postoperative period even after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy due to worsening ‘opacification of the IOL’. Anterior segment Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) found an opaque membrane enveloping the intraocular lens. She underwent peeling of the anterior IOL surface membrane and freeing of any adherence between the IOL and capsular bag. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)
