The essential role of the teacher-student relationship in students' need satisfaction during adolescence
Publication date: July–September 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 58Author(s): Olga Bakadorova, Diana RaufelderAbstractBased on Self-Determination Theory, specifically the mini-theory of Relationships Motivation Theory, the current paper aimed to examine the within and over-time associations between students' perceived need satisfaction and their social relationships with peers and teachers during adolescence. The data stemmed from a large sample (N = 1088; T1 Mage = 13.70, SD = 0.53; T2 Mage = 14.86, SD = 0.57) of German secondary school students, following a two-wave l...

Affiliation value and extracurricular commitment moderate associations between peer victimization and depression
This study examined whether the prospective association between peer victimization and depressive symptoms is moderated by early adolescents' affiliation value (i.e., desire for social contact and close relationships) and extracurricular commitment (i.e., importance attributed to involvement in adult-led organized activities). Data were collected initially from 123 early adolescents in the fifth or sixth grade and again ten months later, following the transition to middle school. The association between peer victimization and adolescent-reported depressive symptoms was stronger at higher levels of parent-reported affiliati...

Children's sharing with collaborators versus competitors: The impact of theory of mind and executive functioning
Publication date: July–September 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 58Author(s): Elizabeth S. Nilsen, Alanna ValckeAbstractWhile children show an appreciation for fairness, their sharing does not always reflect such principles. This work examined how contextual factors (competition/cooperation; self/other perspective) and socio-cognitive skills impact children's sharing. Children (4- to 6-year-olds and 7- to 9-year-olds) set up games played either with (cooperative) or against (competitive) peers. The set up involved allocating resources necessary to completing the task (e.g., blocks used to ...

Teacher-child closeness as a protective factor for at-risk children experiencing residential mobility
Publication date: July–September 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 58Author(s): Sara A. Schmitt, Brittany P. Mihalec-Adkins, Megan E. Pratt, Shannon T. LipscombAbstractThe current study explored the extent to which teacher-child closeness during prekindergarten moderates the association between residential mobility and behavior problems in kindergarten for children living in non-parental care. Data were obtained from the Head Start Impact Study. The sample included 260 children (53% male) who were eligible for Head Start. On average, children were 48.57 months old (SD = 6.95), and were...

Supportive communication between deployed parents and children is linked to children's adjustment
Publication date: July–September 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 58Author(s): Carol K. Sigelman, Sarah L. Friedman, Cynthia A. Rohrbeck, Patrick B. SheehanAbstractTo examine associations between continued communication with a deployed parent and the adjustment of military-connected children during deployment, 180 at-home parents/caregivers of children aged 4 to 18 were surveyed. Overall quantity (frequency) and quality (deployed parent supportiveness and child's positive emotions after communicating) of communication did not differ across age groups and genders, despite age differences in ...

Prosocial pathways to positive adaptation: The mediating role of teacher-child closeness
Publication date: July–September 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 58Author(s): Brianne R. Coulombe, Tuppett M. YatesAbstractDespite robust evidence that prosocial behavior is associated with positive adaptation and likely engenders it, few studies have evaluated mechanisms that may account for these effects. The current study utilized a diverse sample of young children (N = 228, 49.6% female, 45.6% Latinx) to evaluate prospective relations between an observational assessment of children's prosocial sharing behavior at age 6 and children's depressive symptoms and academic achievement at ...

Absenteeism in Appalachian preschool classrooms and children's academic achievement
This study examined preschool absenteeism for children (N = 451) in classrooms in rural areas of Appalachia. A substantial portion of children (47.5%) were chronically absent (missing 10% of more of the school year). The current study focuses on preschool children's developing language and literacy skills that are foundational for future reading and school success. Findings revealed that children who were frequently absent, particularly those who were chronically absent, exhibited fewer gains in literacy over the academic year. No effect of absenteeism was uncovered for language growth. Instructional quality was examin...

Continuity and changes in classroom age composition and achievement in Head Start
Publication date: Available online 1 August 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental PsychologyAuthor(s): Arya Ansari, Kelly M. PurtellAbstractUsing data from the Family and Child Experiences Survey 2009 Cohort (n = 1073), this study considered the implications of mixed-age education for young children's academic achievement when they experienced continuity and/or changes in classroom age composition across two years in Head Start (at age 3 and age 4). Results from these analyses revealed that children in classrooms with a greater number of younger children during their second year in Head Start exhibited fewer gai...

The development of racial/ethnic and socioeconomic achievement gaps during the school years
This study examined developmental trends in academic achievement gaps between poverty and race/ethnicity groups from school entry to middle school using two large longitudinal data sets. We used time-varying effect modeling (TVEM) to estimate how the associations among race/ethnicity, poverty status, and math and reading achievement vary across continuous age from age 5 to age 15. Poor White students consistently outperformed poor Black and poor Hispanic students, with gaps widening around ages 7–8. Furthermore, we found that within-group variation increased across time, which indicated that a standardized difference in ...

The importance of near-seated peers for elementary students' academic engagement and achievement
Publication date: July–August 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 57Author(s): Mariola C. Gremmen, Yvonne H.M. van den Berg, Christian Steglich, René Veenstra, Jan Kornelis DijkstraAbstractAlthough students are part of a group of classmates, they spend the majority of time during lessons with students who are seated next or close to them. Therefore, near-seated peers in elementary school classrooms might play a crucial role in students' academic development. It was hypothesized that near-seated peers influence students' academic engagement and achievement, especially when they are also friend...

Social perspective-taking performance: Construct, measurement, and relations with academic performance and engagement
Publication date: July–August 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 57Author(s): Ha Yeon Kim, Maria D. LaRusso, Lisa B. Hsin, Allen G. Harbaugh, Robert L. Selman, Catherine E. SnowAbstractSocial perspective-taking (SPT), the social-cognitive skill of inferring, considering, and evaluating others' perspectives, is critical in allowing students to engage not only with others in social interactions, but also with many academic materials and activities. However, due to complex conceptualizations of SPT, as well as challenges to its measurement, little research has examined the role of SPT in student...

Development of perceptual and conceptual memory in explicit and implicit memory systems
We examined the developmental trajectory of memory while accounting for both memory systems (explicit-implicit) and processing modes (conceptual-perceptual). Four memory tasks that are believed to reflect the four possible combinations of memory systems and processing modes were administered to 96 individuals in three age groups: mid-childhood, mid-adolescence and young-adulthood (mean age 7.7, 13.7 and 21.8, respectively). For perceptual processing, participants performed a Picture Fragment Identification task and a Pictorial Cued Recall task taping the implicit and explicit memory systems, respectively. For conceptual pr...
