Crossover of parents' work-family conflict to family functioning and child mental health
Publication date: May–June 2019Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 62Author(s): Andisheh Vahedi, Isabel Krug, Elizabeth M. WestruppAbstractWe investigated potential crossover from mothers' and fathers' work-family conflict to their own and their partner's perception of inter-parental conflict and parenting irritability, and subsequent influences on children's and adolescents' mental health. Using a representative sample of Australian children (N = 3061), an autoregressive model tested four mediation paths for mother-reported child internalizing and externalizing problems (4–5 to 14–15 ye...

Mothers' postsecondary entry during early childhood: Short- and long-term effects on children
This study explored the implications of low-income mothers' entry into post-secondary education (PSE) during their children's first five years of life. Using propensity score matching to analyze data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth of 1979, we examined associations between maternal entry into PSE during early childhood and children's short- and long-term (ages 7 and 13, respectively) academic and socioemotional outcomes. We found that mothers' entry into PSE during early childhood had no short-term effects on children. There were, however, long-term positive effects on academic outcomes among children with a...

Supporting parent engagement in a school readiness program: Experimental evidence applying insights from behavioral economics
Publication date: May–June 2019Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 62Author(s): Lisa A. Gennetian, Maria Marti, Joy Lorenzo Kennedy, Jin Han Kim, Helena DuchAbstractEarly childhood interventions aimed at reducing socioeconomic disparities hinge on parent engagement. However, sparking parents' engagement and sustaining it throughout the course of interventions has historically been challenging. We designed program enhancements informed by the interdisciplinary field of behavioral economics to support parent engagement in Getting Ready for School, a school readiness intervention for Head Start presc...

Teachers' ratings of social skills and problem behaviors as concurrent predictors of students' bullying behavior
This study analyzed teacher ratings from the national standardization sample of the Social Skills Improvement System (SSIS) to examine the role of elementary and secondary students' social skills, problem behavior, and academic competence as they relate to bullying behavior. Regression analyses indicated slightly different concurrent predictors of bullying behavior for elementary (N = 544) and secondary (N = 200) students. Specifically, low levels of empathy skills and concurrent high levels of externalizing behaviors were relatively strong correlates with bullying behavior of both elementary and secondary school c...

Developmental precursors of engagement and motivation in fifth grade: Linkages with parent- and teacher-child relationships
Publication date: Available online 29 December 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental PsychologyAuthor(s): Melissa Castle Heatly, Elizabeth Votruba-DrzalAbstractThe primary aims of this investigation are to evaluate how children's relationships with parents and teachers in first, third, and fifth grades are associated with engagement and motivation in fifth grade, and to examine the ways that parents and teachers respond to children's school readiness skills and competencies. Using data from a large longitudinal study, the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (NICHD-SECCYD, n = 1364), this invest...

Maternal and paternal stimulation: Mediators of parenting intervention effects on preschoolers' development
This study examined mothers' and fathers' developmentally stimulating parenting practices (i.e., engagement in play and communication activities) as mediators through which an early parenting intervention improved later cognitive and socioemotional development of 1302 4-year-old children in rural Pakistan. Maternal and paternal stimulation were both reported by the child's mother at 12, 24, and 48 months. Preschoolers' cognitive skills were directly assessed using standardized tests and socioemotional development was based on maternal ratings. Controlling for sociodemographic factors and children's prior levels of develo...

Risk for occupational stress among U.S. kindergarten teachers
Publication date: Available online 10 December 2018Source: Journal of Applied Developmental PsychologyAuthor(s): Richard Lambert, Lauren Boyle, Paul Fitchett, Christopher McCarthyAbstractThe 2011–12 Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) was used to examine occupational stress, occupational commitment, and intention to remain in teaching in a nationally representative sample of U.S. kindergarten teachers (n = 744). Teachers who perceived classroom resources as sufficient to meet demands, tended to report they would become a teacher again (86.5%) and reported intentions to remain in the profession (87.6%). However, of tea...

Stigma, treatment, and health among stimulant users: Life stage as a moderator
Publication date: January–February 2019Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 60Author(s): Erin L. Woodhead, Christine Timko, Xiaotong Han, Michael A. CucciareAbstractThis 3-year study examined associations among drug use stigma, life stage, treatment utilization and health among 710 US adults using stimulants. Consistent with substance use developmental frameworks, life stage was represented by Emerging adulthood (18–25 years old, n = 223), Early-mid adulthood (26–44 years old; n = 384), and Older adulthood (45–61 years old; n = 103). Emerging adults experienced less enacted ...

Theory of mind and peer cooperation in two play contexts
We examined the associations between theory of mind (ToM) and peer cooperation among preschoolers in two play contexts. Fifty-eight 3-to-5-year-old children from middle class suburbs of Brisbane, Australia were tested for ToM and observed in same-age and same-gender dyads for peer cooperation. To measure ToM, we administered the 5-step ToM scale. With an implicit false belief task, children's eye gaze responses to indirect action anticipation prompt were assessed. To measure peer cooperation, we used independent and joint play contexts and coded communicative and coordinated behaviours. Performance on the ToM scale, but no...

Predicting child problem behavior and maternal/paternal parent-child aggression: Identifying early prevention targets
Publication date: January–February 2019Source: Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Volume 60Author(s): Christina M. Rodriguez, Shannon M.O. WittigAbstractParental socio-cognitive factors may predict their physical discipline use as well as their perceptions of children's problem behavior; infant temperament may also influence parents' discipline use. Using a bidirectional approach, the current study investigated whether attitudes approving of parent-child aggression (PCA), negative child behavior attributions, knowledge of nonphysical discipline options, and infant temperament predicted 186 mothers' and 146 fath...
