Mental Health and Nasal Function —Reply
In Reply Mental health is complex, and there may be various domains that influence perception of nasal function. For instance, our research suggests that there is an association between mental well-being and self-esteem, but not between mental well-being and body dysmorphia. Dr Bartley ’s suggestion about the association between anxiety and a worse perception of nasal function is well worth consideration, especially given that patients with anxiety often experience symptoms of dyspnoea. Our study did not evaluate anxiety as a factor influencing perception of nasal function, nor was hyperventilation assessed during the ob...

Mental Health and Nasal Function
To the Editor Strazdins and colleagues have noted that patients with poor mental health status have a poorer self-perception of nasal function. More than 60 years ago, Holmes et al observed a similar relationship between anxiety and a number of nasal symptoms, including nasal congestion. In a previous report, I noted that hyperventilation and hyperventilation syndrome, which is associated with both anxiety and depression, is common in patients presenting with nasal congestion, particularly after failed nasal surgery. Hanna et al have made similar observations. Physiological, epidemiological, and clinical evidence support a...

Review of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
In 2001, Raza Pasha, MD, edited and publishedOtolaryngology –Head and Neck Surgery: A Clinical Reference Guide. This resource is currently in its fourth print edition and is ubiquitous in residency programs around the United States. The success of this book is due to its concise format and excellent overview of the specialty of Otolaryngology. Shaun Desai, MD, has borrowed some of this format for his text,Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: Clinical Reference Guide, and replicates this success with a narrower focus on the subspecialty of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Partial Cost Cartilage Harvest for Rhinoplasty
To the Editor We read the article titled “Technique to Reduce Time, Pain, and Risk in Costal Cartilage Harvest” by Nelson and Gaball in a recent issue ofJAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, and we watched with great interest the corresponding video for the article. The authors did well to demonstrate the bent blade used for decreasing the risk of pleural tear and the use of liposomal preparation of bupivacaine for eliminating postoperative donor-site pain. In this Letter, we would like to relate our experience and share a lesson in these perspectives that could be conducive for further application of these techniques. (Source: ...
