Endodontic management of bilateral type II dens invaginatus
This article reports on the conservative endodontic management of bilateral upper central incisors diagnosed with infected dens invaginatus (Oehlers type II) and associated irreversible pulpitis with concomitant oligodontia. The use of contemporary endodontic techniques in the diagnosis, treatment planning and management of the case are highlighted. (Source: International Journal of Stomatology and Occlusion Medicine)

Analysis of the histopathological features of 54 cases of peripheral giant cell granuloma
Conclusion In addition to the common microscopic features the data showed that only type I multinucleated giant cells of PGCGs have cannibalistic behavior, were occasionally involved in phagocytosis of hemosiderin and sometimes entered the lumen of vessels with an as yet unknown mediated process. Temporal and infratemporal hematoma
Conclusion Uncomplicated upper third molar extraction is one of the most common procedures of oral and maxillofacial surgery but can nevertheless trigger unexpected late complications, such as bleeding into the deep skull spaces. In such cases referral to an oral maxillofacial surgeon is essential for appropriate follow-up and management. (Source: International Journal of Stomatology and Occlusion Medicine)

Radicular cyst in mixed dentition
Abstract Radicular cysts are the most frequent odontogenic cystic lesions in human tooth-bearing areas but according to the English literature are rarely associated with deciduous teeth. This case report presents an additional case of a radicular cyst associated with a deciduous mandibular molar along with a bifid rib. The presentation, diagnosis, management and outcome of this radicular cyst are discussed. (Source: International Journal of Stomatology and Occlusion Medicine)

Role of anterior segmental osteotomy for management of dento-osseous deformities
Abstract Background The procedures of anterior segmental osteotomy are stable, versatile and can be undertaken for multiple deformities affecting the anterior portion of jaws. Objectives To describe indications in which anterior segmental osteotomy alone can correct maxillomandibular deformities and if adjunct surgery is needed or not. Orthosurgical planning with cephalometric predictions of those deformities of anterior portions of jaws which can be corrected by anterior se...

A 3D computerized tomography study of changes in craniofacial morphology of Portuguese skulls from the eighteenth century to the present
This study examined the three-dimensional (3D) changes in craniofacial morphology between 482 identified Portuguese skulls from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries and 150 modern Portuguese individuals randomly selected from the armed forces. The goal was to investigate the interrelationship between changes in various parts of the skull, in particular, the cranial base, the brain supporting structures, and the face. Cone beam computed tomography images from the identified skull collections belonging to the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Coimbra and Natural History National Museum of Lisbon were used...

Panoramic radiography study on prevalence of zygomatic air cell defect
Conclusion The occurrence of ZACD is a normal radiographic variant seen in panoramic radiographs. Very few studies have documented the prevalence of ZACD and its characteristics. The present study observed an overall prevalence of 2.8 % which was consistent with other studies. Knowledge of ZACD may be helpful in the diagnosis of other pathological entities affecting the zygomatic region, in surgical planning of temporomandibular disorders and understanding the spread of pathological processes. Systematic approach to long standing pleomorphic adenoma of the upper lip
Abstract Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumor commonly involving the salivary glands and mainly the parotid gland. It affects the minor salivary glands with the palate being the most common site of occurrence. The involvement of the upper lip is considered rare with very few reports in the literature. Clinically it is a painless, non-erythematous, firm and slowly growing tumor. Microscopically it has a biphasic microscopic appearance with mixed epithelial and stromal components. Although it is benign the rate of malignant transformation is reported as being up to 4 % in long standing cases. The incid...

Extracranial schwannoma of the infraorbital nerve
This article reports a rare case of a solitary benign schwannoma arising from the infraorbital nerve which presented as an asymptomatic swelling in the right cheek region of the face. Treatment was carried out with the patient under general anesthesia by complete excision with preservation of the nerve and without significant postoperative morbidity. An unusual complication of late onset allergic contact dermatitis to povidone-iodine in oral and maxillofacial surgery
Conclusion Povidone-iodine is the most commonly used antiseptic solution prior to surgery. However, allergic contact dermatitis due to PVP-I has not been extensively documented or reported and hence underevaluated compared to other commonly encountered allergens. There is almost general agreement to the proposition that PVP-I is a very rare sensitizer (Brandao et al., Textbook of contact dermatitis, 3rd ed, pp. 687–723, 2001; Marks et al., Contact and occupational dermatology, 3rd ed, 2002) although there have been some conflicting reports on the matter. However, sometimes when prolonged skin contac...

Post trauma craniofacial deformities and treatment protocol
Abstract Correction of post traumatic craniofacial deformities constitutes a challenging but worthwhile endeavor. Traumatic telecanthus, enopthalmos and occlusal deformity are the deformities most refractory to secondary correction. Aesthetic results are adversely affected by the severity and number of pre-existing abnormalities and by the presence of established deformities (beyond 6–12 months). The basic principles of treatment include an osseous reconstruction surgery as early as possible to restore the anatomically correct craniofacial architecture followed by selective ancillary procedures to add...

Management of accidental aspiration of foreign bodies in implant dentistry
This article is a case report of accidental aspiration of a screwdriver used for clinical procedures in implant dentistry and the medical retrieval. Case description A 35-year-old female patient aspirated a foreign body which had fallen from the operator’s hand. The patient was referred to an emergency department to check the possibility of removal of the impacted screwdriver as soon as possible. Following fiberoptic intubation and endoscopy to observe the position of the foreign body, a thoracic surgeon introduced a rigid bronchoscope....
