Oral cancer screening practices of Canadian dental hygienists
ConclusionDental hygienists in this study are regularly conducting OCSs; however, they lack comfort discussing sensitive topics such as transmission of oral HPV, and screenings may not be fully comprehensive. (Source: International Journal of Dental Hygiene)

Loss of idealism or realistic optimism? A cross ‐sectional analysis of dental hygiene students’ and registered dental hygienists’ professional identity perceptions
ConclusionsThe fact that dental hygienists had less positive role perceptions than dental hygiene students might lead to the conclusion that a loss of idealism occurs over the course of a professional lifespan. However, dental hygienists actually improved their role perceptions over time and students’ future descriptions were more positive than their current descriptions, supporting the interpretation that realistic optimism dominates professional role perceptions in these times of change. Supportive periodontal treatment: Pocket depth changes and tooth loss
ConclusionThis study indicates that with regard to bleeding on probing and probing pocket depth, patients receiving supportive periodontal treatment maintain their periodontal condition. However, in this group of adherent maintenance patients, tooth loss was most prevalent for molar teeth. (Source: International Journal of Dental Hygiene)

Parental attitudes towards oral health and caries ‐risk in their children
ConclusionsIt was concluded that using a self‐assessed attitude tool, derived from the results of a Q‐methodological study, it is possible to identify different groups of parents with different oral health‐related risk factors. Of course, it is hardly likely that people are 100% only 1 type of parent; parents can be considered to be a mix of different typologies. However, information on the composition of that mix may be helpful for the dental professional to estimate risks and to deliver a more tailored prevention strategy in children. Efficacy and acceptance of a high ‐velocity microdroplet device for interdental cleaning in gingivitis patients—A monitored, randomized controlled trial
ConclusionImproving the interdental cleaning routine with the microdroplet device or dental floss reduced gingivitis and plaque in both groups. Acceptance regarding comfort of use was higher with the microdroplet device. Dental floss remained the first choice for narrow interdental spaces, yet the microdroplet device offers an effective and well‐accepted alternative for patients who fail the proper flossing routine. Periodontal maintenance following active specialist treatment: Should patients stay put or return to primary dental care for continuing care? A comparison of outcomes based on the literature
ConclusionWithin the limitations of the data available, it appears that specialist PM is effective in sustaining periodontal stability following active specialist intervention. There is limited evidence that PDC provides the same level of care; however, the limited comparative data available suggest that outcomes could be slightly worse in PDC. A review of the oral health ‐related quality of life (OHRQL) model for dental hygiene: Eighteen years later
ConclusionEighteen years of the literature confirms that the OHRQL is being used minimally in education, research, and practice. Greater emphasis is needed around the collection and assessment of oral health‐related quality of life measures for providing patient‐centred care. (Source: International Journal of Dental Hygiene)

Change in oral health status associated with menopause in Japanese dental hygienists
ConclusionsThe results demonstrated a negative correlation between E2 levels and SRQ‐D scores as well as salivary α‐amylase activities, suggesting an influence of E2 on mental condition. Furthermore, E2 decrease may result in reduction of salivary flow which in turn causes various problems of oral health. Since the participants were graduates from several dental hygienist schools and working at various places, these results can be generalized to Japanese dental hygienists to some extent. Relationship between self ‐assessment and clinical evaluation of dental plaque and gingival condition in Japanese adolescents
ConclusionMost adolescents could not recognize their dental plaque and gingival condition. Adolescents with poorer dental plaque level or gingival condition had lower recognition scores compared to those with better oral health. Improving oral health self‐assessment skills could help adolescents achieve better oral health. (Source: International Journal of Dental Hygiene)
