Operative Distal Humerus Fractures in Older Patients: Predictors for Early Complications Based on a National Database
ConclusionClinical complications were low no matter the type of treatment. Low preoperative hematocrit was a risk factor in both ORIF and TEA. (Source: HSS Journal)

Post-Dural Puncture Headache is Uncommon in Young Ambulatory Surgery Patients
ConclusionsThere was a low overall incidence of PDPH among patients aged 15 –45. Pre-planned subgroup analyses of PDPH incidence by age group revealed a high risk of PDPH among a small sample of 15–19-year-olds. (Source: HSS Journal)

Functional Outcomes of Modular Conversion of Hemiarthroplasty or Total to Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty
ConclusionsModular conversion of an anatomic to a RTSA is feasible in a majority of patients. Despite the complexity of the procedure, modular conversion of hemiarthroplasty or TSA to RTSA can significantly improve functional outcomes with a low rate of complications. (Source: HSS Journal)

Reliability and Reproducibility of Subject Positioning with EOS Low-Dose Biplanar X-ray
ConclusionsEOS has relatively low radiation and allows standing assessment of limb length and alignment. In this study, length measurements and inter-bead distances demonstrated minimal error due to positioning in the EOS gantry, documenting that there is minimal error from positioning, minimal magnification/shrinkage error, and exceptional inter and intra-rater reliability. EOS is the preferred method for length and angular measurements, and with tantalum beads, is ideal for measuring growth about the physis. (Source: HSS Journal)

In Vivo Plantar Pressures in Adult-Acquired Flatfoot Compared to Control Using an Intraoperative Pedobarographic Device
ConclusionThis device did not show differences in supine plantar pressures of flatfoot patients and healthy subjects, highlighting the limitations of intraoperative devices in guiding flatfoot correction. The differences between flatfoot and controls during walking and the correlations between supine and walking conditions suggest that dynamic plantar pressures are a more useful parameter in guiding flatfoot reconstruction. Thrombotic and Infectious Morbidity Are Associated with Transfusion in Posterior Spine Fusion
ConclusionOur data demonstrate risk-adjusted and transfusion dose-related increases in perioperative morbidity, with thrombotic and infectious events being the most common. (Source: HSS Journal)

Bone Mineral Density Response from Teriparatide in Patients with Osteoporosis
ConclusionEighty-three percent of patients with osteoporosis showed a>3% increase in BMD after TPTD treatment. Baseline parameters, prior bisphosphonate therapy, and the changes in bone markers showed no correlation with final BMD outcome. (Source: HSS Journal)

Analysis of Player Statistics in Major League Baseball Players Before and After Achilles Tendon Repair
ConclusionThe incidence of Achilles tendon rupture in MLB has increased substantially since 1996. While comparison suggests that overall Achilles tendon injury does not have an effect on MLB player statistics in the years following surgical repair, subset analysis of injury to the rear (power-generating) leg may lead to a decline in those statistics which denote a player ’s speed and running ability. Prophylactic Postoperative Antibiotics May Not Reduce Pin Site Infections After External Fixation
ConclusionsOur randomized data do not suggest that oral antibiotics alter the incidence, timing, or severity of pin infection. This study does not support the use of prophylactic oral antibiotics in healthy patients. (Source: HSS Journal)

Design Considerations for the Next Generation Hip Resurfacing Implant
AbstractThe current generation of hip resurfacing consists of a metal-on-metal ball and monoblock socket of minimal thickness. Although results in certain patient subgroups have been excellent at up to 15  years of follow-up, other subgroups have had poor results. The hard-on-hard bearing is susceptible to edge-loading conditions and may produce excessive metallic debris; furthermore, other patients have had allergic reactions to the metal byproducts. In both situations, there can be clinical failur es from adverse local tissue reactions. As such, the role of hip resurfacing has diminished over the last decade because of ...

Hospital for Special Surgery ACL Registry: 2-Year Outcomes Suggest Low Revision and Return to OR Rates
ConclusionUnderstanding ACL surgery, patient outcomes, and risk factors for revision ACL surgery and subsequent knee surgery after primary ACL reconstruction is essential. Patients less than 18  years of age have a higher risk of subsequent knee surgery and subsequent ACL surgery than older patients. (Source: HSS Journal)
