Characterization of Re-admission and Emergency Department Visits Within 90  Days Following Lower-Extremity Arthroplasty
ConclusionWe identified demographic and procedure-related variables associated with an increased risk of ED visits and inpatient re-admissions after TKA or THA. Understanding these variables will contribute to improved care quality. (Source: HSS Journal)

Trends Associated with Open Versus Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair
ConclusionArthroscopic RTC surgery predominates and continues to rise. With increasing patient age, there was an increase in the proportion of open repair. The majority of RTC repairs were performed in patients between 65 and 69  years of age. (Source: HSS Journal)

MRI Findings at the Bone-Component Interface in Symptomatic Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty and the Relationship to Radiographic Findings
ConclusionMRI with the addition of MAVRIC sequences could be a complementary tool for assessing symptomatic UKA and for quantifying appearances at the bone-component interface. This technique showed good reproducibility of analysis of the bone-component interface after cemented UKA. Future studies are necessary to define the bone-component interface of symptomatic and asymptomatic UKA patients. (Source: HSS Journal)

Has Tranexamic Acid in Total Knee Arthroplasty Made Tourniquet Use Obsolete?
AbstractThe application of tranexamic acid (TXA) in total joint arthroplasty has dramatically improved peri-operative blood management. In light of these benefits, a study by Huang et al., “Intravenous and Topical Tranexamic Acid Alone Are Superior to Tourniquet Use for Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty,” evaluates the need for continued use of the intra-operative tourniquet, which remains a routine practice with documented benefits and adverse effects. This review evaluates the stu dy’s design and critically interprets its findings for clinical practice. Through a prospective, randomized trial, Huang et al. demonstrat...

Scapular Body Fracture in the Athlete: A Systematic Review
ConclusionScapular body fractures in athletes occur primarily from muscle contraction against a resisted force in the upper extremity during contact sports. Unlike non-sporting fractures, these fractures usually involve low-energy mechanisms without associated injury and conservative treatment is usually successful. (Source: HSS Journal)

Patient and Surgeon Expectations Prior to Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction
ConclusionIn general, patient expectations align well with surgeon expectations. Patients who are older, have a lower activity level, and who have selected allograft over autograft for ACLR could also be at risk for greater discordance. Understanding these differences, and their predictors, will help guide physicians when they are counseling patients about ACLR and also help them interact with patients after surgery as they assess outcomes. The Quality of Online Resources Available to Patients Interested in Knee Biologic Therapies Is Poor
ConclusionMany online resources are available for patients seeking information about knee biologic therapies, but the quality of websites identified was very poor. Patients should be counseled that the information available online for knee biologic therapy is unreliable. Surgeons should play an increased role in providing resources to patients and educating them on biologic options. (Source: HSS Journal)

Repair of a Proximal Hamstring Rupture in a 14-Year-Old Patient: A Case Report
We present the case of a 14-year-old male with a widely displaced ischial avulsion fracture and a bony fragment that was too small to allow for bony fixation. The patient presented with left-buttock pain and ecchymosis, as well as tenderness at the ischial tuberosity, following an injury sustained while running 2  weeks prior. Imaging demonstrated an avulsion of the proximal hamstrings with a 4-mm bony fragment, too small to allow for repair. The patient underwent primary repair using two 3-mm suture anchors. The bony fragment was not excised but incorporated into the repair. Although most proximal hamstrin g injuries in ...

Differences in Coracoid and Glenoid Dimensions Based on Sex, Race, and Age: Implications for Use of the Latarjet Technique in Glenoid Reconstruction
ConclusionDimensions were significantly larger in males and in Caucasians, aside from coracoid thickness. Mean dimensions increased with advancing age. Coracoid positioning using classic or modified Latarjet techniques restored glenoid width defects measuring 20% of the glenoid width, while the modified technique allowed for restoration of larger defects. Patient Satisfaction After Total Knee Replacement: A Systematic Review
Conclusion:There are numerous studies reporting patient satisfaction after TKR, and publication on the topic has been increasing over the past decade. However, the majority of studies represent lower levels of evidence and use heterogeneous methods for measuring satisfaction, and few studies use validated satisfaction instruments. In general, the majority of studies report satisfaction rates ranging from 80 to 100%, with post-operative functional outcome and relief of pain being paramount determinants for achieving satisfaction. An Epidemiologic Perspective on Scaphoid Fracture Treatment and Frequency of Nonunion Surgery in the USA
ConclusionsOur estimated incidence of scaphoid fracture is higher than previously reported. The increased enthusiasm in the USA to surgically treat scaphoid fractures is reflected by our trend analysis. The frequency of surgical treatment for presumed nonunion after initial surgical management for closed scaphoid fractures exceeded 10%. Given the increased utilization of surgery, surgeons and patients should be aware of the frequency of nonunion treatment to inform treatment decisions. (Source: HSS Journal)

Disease Burden of Medial Epicondylitis in the USA Is Increasing: An Analysis of 19,856 Patients From 2007 to 2014
ConclusionsWhile the annual incidence of ME and surgical treatment of ME increased significantly from 2007 to 2014, the proportion of cases treated surgically did not. Notably, the proportion of patients 65  years of age or older diagnosed with and being surgically treated for ME has increased in recent years. Total reimbursement for ME has steadily risen, although per-patient reimbursement rates have not significantly changed. (Source: HSS Journal)

Peer-to-Peer Collaboration Adds Value for Surgical Colleagues
ConclusionIn the majority of cases exchanged between young surgeons via a group messaging system, a significant impact on patient care was appreciated. In a technology-driven era, peer-to-peer advisory for difficult cases via a rapid feedback method may allow for substantial improvement in patient care, particularly for surgeons not practicing at a large academic medical center with access to several partners and multiple opinions.
