Warfarin—an expensive cause of delay in discharge of elective arthroplasty patients
Conclusion Extrapolating, the annual excess cost of delay in discharge for chronically anticoagulated arthroplasty patients in our institution is approximately £200,000. We conclude that substantial financial and resource savings can be made if warfarinisation is undertaken at the community level. (Source: European Orthopaedics and Traumatology)

Influence of pre-operative computerized tomography on the results of surgical treatment of secondary chondrosarcomas arising on osteochondromas: a retrospective sequential cohort study
Conclusion Despite the retrospective design and the low number of patients in this study, systematic pre-operative CT helped to improve the results of the surgical treatment of secondary chondrosarcomas arising on osteochondromas. (Source: European Orthopaedics and Traumatology)

Current concepts for treating proximal femur fractures in Europe
Conclusion In conclusion, the current European system of education and training in combination with the increasing cooperation between the countries has improved the overall understanding of PFF fracture patterns. Although there are still regional differences in the treatment of PFF, the major principles in addressing PFF throughout Europe are meanwhile more congruent than those two decades ago. The study proves a successful implementation of the topic “trauma” within the European education course concepts. (Source: European Orthopaedics and Traumatology)

Outpatients thromboprophylaxis following lower limb immobilisation: an institution’s experience
Conclusion Although this study was unable to demonstrate, a statistically significant impact on VTE rates with prophylaxis, the protective role of prophylaxis is suggested by the low incidence of VTE in our study population, which is comparable to literature (20 %). Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the cervical spine successfully treated with subtotal resection and radiotherapy
Abstract Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a mid-grade malignant neoplasm of endothelial origin with an unpredictable clinical course and prognosis, representing <1 % of malignant bone tumors. A 63-year-old man was visited for a loss of strength in the upper right limb. MRI confirmed an expansive process in C5, PET scan did not find any other tumor localizations, and the CT-guided biopsy determined it to be an endothelial tumor. C5 corpectomy along with a C2-T2 arthrodesis was performed in a two-stage surgery, and subtotal tumor excision was obtained. Then, the patient underwent 23 radiother...

Platelet-rich plasma injections for knee pathologies: a review
Abstract Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has found applications in various pathological conditions of the knee as in other areas. There are various preparations in the PRP family, and these have different terminologies. This paper reviews PRP injections in knee conditions in human clinical studies. We have divided PRP application for knee pathologies into extra-articular, intra-articular and intra-operative. There is level III evidence for PRP use in cases of patellar tendinopathy as well as in arthritis. These injections provide better results in degenerative chondropathy and early stages of arthritis than ...

Treatment of comminuted intra-articular proximal interphalangeal joint fracture using static external fixation with or without supplementary Kirschner wires
Conclusions Based on the clinical and radiological outcomes of this study at the final follow-up examination, it was found that the use of the static external fixator in the treatment of comminuted intra-articular proximal interphalangeal fracture is an adequate technique.
