Long-term effects of low-intensity training with slow movement on motor function of elderly patients: a prospective observational study
ConclusionsSlow body weight training for 12  months without a machine improved the lower limb muscle strength. Therefore, it could have the same effects as training using a machine.Trial registrationUMIN000030853. Registered 17 January 2018 (retrospectively registered). Effect of bisphenol F, an analog of bisphenol A, on the reproductive functions of male rats
ConclusionBPF showed an antagonistic effect on male reproductive hormones and induce alterations in testicular morphology. Increased oxidative stress and decreased testicular antioxidant status might be the underlying mechanism of BFP-induced testicular toxicity. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Association between human T cell leukemia virus 1 (HTLV-1) infection and advanced periodontitis in relation to hematopoietic activity among elderly participants: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionsAmong elderly participants, the association between HTLV-1 infection and advanced periodontitis is influenced by hematopoietic activity. Since hematopoietic activity is associated with endothelial maintenance, these findings provide an efficient tool for clarifying the underlying mechanism of the progression of periodontitis among elderly participants. Associations between metal concentrations in whole blood and placenta previa and placenta accreta: the Japan Environment and Children ’s Study (JECS)
ConclusionParticipants with placenta previa had higher Cd concentrations. However, this study was cross-sectional and lacked important information related to Cd concentration, such as detailed smoking habits and sources of Cd intake. In addition, the subjects in this study comprised ordinary pregnant Japanese women, and it was impossible to observe the relationship between a wide range of Cd exposure and placenta previa. Therefore, epidemiological and experimental studies are warranted to verify the relationship between Cd exposure and pregnancy abnormalities. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Association between incidence of fatal intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke and fine particulate air pollution
ConclusionsFatal ICH incidence was associated with PM2.5 exposure. Our results also suggested that diabetes may increase the risk for ICH incidence in relation to PM2.5. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Exposure profile of mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, copper, selenium and zinc in maternal blood, cord blood and placenta: the Tohoku Study of Child Development in Japan
ConclusionsTHg and Sb levels in the cord blood were twofold higher than those in the maternal blood. Cord blood to maternal blood ratios for As, Cd and Sb widely varied between individuals. To understand the effects of prenatal exposure, further research regarding the variations of placental transfer of elements is necessary. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Association of derived patterns of musculoskeletal disorders with psychological problems: a latent class analysis
ConclusionMusculoskeletal disorders can be summarized in the latent class-derived patterns in the adult study population and provide additional prognostics. Common psychological problems are significantly associated with the type of musculoskeletal disorder patterns. The findings in this study could be useful for dealing with prevention and treatment programs. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Bacterial contamination of drinking water sources in rural villages of Mohale Basin, Lesotho: exposures through neighbourhood sanitation and hygiene practices
ConclusionWater sources in studied villages were contaminated with faeces and posed a health risk to consumers of that water. Community-led sanitation and hygiene education and better water source protection are urgently needed. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Analysis of individual and combined estrogenic effects of bisphenol, nonylphenol and diethylstilbestrol in immature rats with mathematical models
ConclusionOur results showed that CA model provide more accurate results than the factorial analysis, the mode of combined effects of the three EDCs were dose addition, except mixtures in LOAEL doses, NP and DES combined effects indicates antagonistic effects based on the CA model but additive based on the factorial analysis. In particular, BPA and NP produced combination effects that are larger than the effect of each mixture component applied separately at BMDL doses, which show that additivity is important in the assessment of chemicals with estrogenic effects. The use of BMDL as point of departure in risk assessment ma...

Drowning of a patient with epilepsy while showering
AbstractIn Japan, because the most common site of drowning among patients with epilepsy is the bathtub, showering is generally recommended as an alternative to bathing. Carbamazepine, levetiracetam, lamotrigine, clobazam, and perampanel were prescribed daily. One day while showering, the patient was found lying with her face immersed in water that had accumulated on the floor of the batht ub. A forens...

Outbreak investigation of lead neurotoxicity in children from artificial jewelry cottage industry
ConclusionThis study emphasizes that many focal sources of lead poisoning still remain especially in the unorganized sector. In cases presenting with unexplained neurotoxicity, specific occupational and environmental inquiry for chemical poisoning, with special consideration for lead, should be actively pursued. Responses to persuasive messages encouraging professional help seeking for depression: comparison between individuals with and without psychological distress
ConclusionThe exposure to persuasive messages may promote help-seeking intentions for depression. It seems likely that loss framing will work better than neutral and gain framing. Meanwhile, the responses to persuasive messages may differ to some extent between distressed and non-distressed individuals, as individuals with psychological distress are likely to be more susceptible to persuasive messages than those without.Trial registrationNot applicable; this is not a report of intervention trial.
