Value of serum CA 19-9 in obstructive jaundice
Conclusion: A nonsignificant decrease in CA 19-9 following biliary drainage in cases of obstructive jaundice suggests malignancy. Malignant obstructive jaundice could be predicted at CA 19-9 cutoff value above 40.5 IU/ml. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

TRAIL-R1 polymorphisms predict the risk of development of hepatocellular carcinoma in Egyptian patients with chronic hepatitis C: a case control study
Conclusion: DR4 polymorphisms are associated with the risk of developing HCC in HCV patients and can allow better risk stratification of those patients and can help in the early detection, management, and better outcome of HCC/HCV patients. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

The effect of the degree of hepatitis C-related fibrosis on the responsiveness to pegylated interferon α-2a versus pegylated interferon α-2b: Egyptian study
Conclusion: Hepatitis C virus therapy with PegIFNα-2a or PegIFNα-2b, both with ribavirin, had no significant differences in achievement of SVR. The degree of fibrosis did not affect response to treatment with either regimen. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

A case of diaphragmatic hernia
Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a rare condition addressed in the medical literature as a surgical problem. It is usually a disorder of the newborns, equally occurring in males and females. There are 3 basic types of congenital diaphragmatic hernia: the posterolateral Bochdalek hernia, the anterior Morgagni hernia, and the hiatus hernia. This is a presentation of a newborn with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and a favorable outcome after surgical repair. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Treatment-induced copper deficiency in two patients with Wilson’s disease
We present two WD cases that developed copper deficiency as a result of their treatment. These cases improve our understanding and management of copper deficiency in WD and highlight the importance of copper-level monitoring in WD. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Serum level of interleukin-8 and interleukin-10 as predictors for response to interferon–ribavirin combined therapy
Conclusion: We can consider serum IL-8 and IL-10 pretreatment levels as good predictive noninvasive markers to predict SVR to peg-IFN and RBV therapy in CHC patients. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Assessment of the diagnostic role of annexin A2 (ANXA2) and insulin-like growth factor-1 as serum markers for hepatocellular carcinoma
Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic utility of annexin A2 (ANXA2) and insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF1) in HCC in comparison with α-fetoprotein (AFP). Patients and methods: The study included 90 participants categorized into three groups. Group I (HCC) included 35 patients presenting with HCC. Group II (cirrhosis) included 25 cirrhotic patients without HCC. Group III (controls) included 30 apparently healthy individuals. Levels of AFP, IGF1, and ANXA2 wer...

Noninvasive markers of liver disease in patients with HBeAg negative chronic hepatitis B and normal enzymes
Conclusion: None of the tested noninvasive indices could distinguish the significant liver fibrosis effectively. We suggest the use of platelets, γ-glutamyl transferase and γ-globulins, API, and fibroindex for monitoring disease severity and predicting prognosis. In suspicious cases, a more validated modality such as FibroScan can be performed. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Longevity of vaccination in children with chronic liver disease
Conclusion: HAV and HBV vaccines are safe and well tolerated in children with CLD, whether cirrhotic or not. HAV vaccine induces a satisfactory immune response. More frequent doses of HBV vaccine may achieve better results especially with long-term follow-up. There was no statistical difference between cirrhotic and noncirrhotic patients as regards vaccination response. Recommendation: Immunizations against HAV and HBV are recommended in CLD. Postvaccinal HBsAb titer should be checked. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Urotensin II as a novel marker for portal hypertension and bleeding varices: an Egyptian survey
Background and aim: Urotensin II (U-II), a somatostatin-like cyclic peptide, was recently identified as the most potent human vasoconstrictor peptide. We investigated whether serum U-II could be considered a marker for portal hypertension (PHT) and its complications in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related cirrhosis. Patients and methods: After clinical, ultrasonographic, and endoscopic assessments and exclusion of patients with hypertension or diabetes and cardiac or renal comorbidities, 75 patients with HCV-related cirrhosis were classified into three equal groups. Group A included 25 patients with PHT presentin...

Role of fibroscan, TGF-β1, and YKL-40 in the detection of hepatic fibrosis in chronic hepatitis c patients with and without schistosomiasis
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of transient elastography, the direct fibrogenic markers YKL-40, and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β1) alone or in combination versus liver biopsy for detecting the stage as well as the progression rates of hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C with or without schistosomiasis. Patients and methods: A cohort study was performed on 117 patients with hepatitis C virus alone or coinfected with schistosomiasis. Patients were enrolled and prospectively evaluated with two liver biopsies (at entry and at the end of follow-up), and true rates in the...
