The relation between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and carotid intima-media thickness in Egyptian patients
This study was designed to assess the correlation between NAFLD as a cardiovascular risk factor and carotid atherosclerosis. Patients and methods A hospital-based case–control analytical study was conducted on 60 participants who were divided into three groups as follows. Group I included 20 diabetic patients with NAFLD. Group II included 20 nondiabetic patients with NAFLD. Group III included 20 healthy participants who served as a control group. The right and left carotid intima-media thickness (CIMTs) and their maximum reading (CIMTmax) was measured by a skilled sonographer blind to the groups. Pelviabdominal ultras...

Evaluating tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 in spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
Conclusion Serum and ascitic fluid samples should be included in the routine investigations carried out on hospitalized patients with cirrhosis and ascites. Examination of these samples for levels of TNF-α and IL-6 help in early detection of SBP to avoid complication. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Microbiological study of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in Tanta University Hospitals: empirical antibiotic therapy
Conclusion E. coli is the most common organism causing SBP; however, Gram positive bacteria are progressively increasing. Meropenem and amikacin are the drugs of choice for empirical treatment with increasing resistance to third-generation cephalosporins. (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Can hepatitis C virus core antigen be used as a reliable marker of viral load for hepatitis C virus infection in genotype 4?
In this study, HCV core antigen sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 96.15, 100, 100, and 80%, respectively, in relation to HCV RNA PCR results. There was a positive correlation between HCV RNA and HCV core Ag (r=0.916, P (Source: Egyptian Liver Journal)

Thyroid dysfunction in chronic viral hepatitis [B and C]; An Egyptian pilot study
Conclusion Chronic HCV infection can be associated with the appearance of TD. Antithyroid Abs (anti-TG and anti-TPO Abs) provide valuable information as regards the TD that may occur in patients with both HCV and HBV. Chronic HCV-infected patients should be informed of the risk for TD, and hence the importance of their screening for autoantibodies and serum TSH hormone to assess their medical status.
