Publication date: Available online 6 June 2019Source: Education for Chemical EngineersAuthor(s): C.V. Miguel, C. Moreira, M.A. Alves, J.B.L.M. Campos, J. Glassey, E. Schaer, N. Kockmann, A. Porjazoska Kujundziski, M. Polakovic, L.M. MadeiraAbstractEvaluating the effectiveness of teaching and learning core knowledge outcomes and professional skills is a highly challenging task that has not yet been satisfactorily addressed at higher education level. The iTeach European project consortium developed a framework for assessing the effectiveness of various pedagogical methodologies in chemical engineering education, including th...

Proposal for the introduction of the concept of multiplicity of solutions in steady-state distillation problems in the syllabus of separation processes
Publication date: Available online 5 June 2019Source: Education for Chemical EngineersAuthor(s): Amparo Gómez-Siurana, Alicia Font, Vicente GomisAbstractThe existence of multiplicity in steady-state separation problems based on the use of equilibrium stage cascades has been known since the second half of the 20th century. Nevertheless, there are few textbooks -among those usually accessible to Chemical Engineering students- explaining this behavior and even when it is considered it is not deeply treated. In this work, we propose a distillation problem whose resolution allows the instructor the opportunity to introduce som...

Project-led-education experience as a partial strategy in first years of engineering courses
Publication date: Available online 5 June 2019Source: Education for Chemical EngineersAuthor(s): Ana M. Ruiz-Ortega, Juan J. Gallardo-Rodríguez, Elvira Navarro-López, María del Carmen Cerón-GarcíaAbstractRecently, there has been a growing tendency to substitute or supplement teacher-centered strategies for others student-centered. These include problem-based learning or collaborative learning. In certain areas, such as engineering, project-led learning collects some of the benefits of problem-based learning and integrates others that are of interest to the formation of engineers. More recently, project-led education a...

Learning distillation by a combined experimental and simulation approach in a three steps laboratory: Vapor pressure, vapor-liquid equilibria and distillation column
Publication date: Available online 22 May 2019Source: Education for Chemical EngineersAuthor(s): Carlo PirolaAbstractDistillation is one of the most important separation process in industrial chemistry. This operation is based on a deep knowledge of the fluid phase equilibria involved in the mixture to be separated. In particular, the most important aspects are the determination of the vapor pressures of the single compounds and the correct representation of the eventual not ideality of the mixture. Simulation science is a fundamental tool for managing these complex topics and chemical engineers students have to learn and ...

The introduction to engineering course: A case study from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia
This study concludes to show that first year engineering students who have gone through the activities in the course have understood the role of engineers and their job functions. They have also managed to develop professional skills as part of their initial journey to become good engineers. (Source: Education for Chemical Engineers)

Towards understanding the moral reasoning process of senior chemical engineering students in process safety contexts
This study seeks to determine how senior chemical engineering students approach reasoning through process safety scenarios through the use of a mixed methods study. This study found that four out of the five students who participated in the study demonstrated post-conventional reasoning, and the remaining student showed conventional reasoning based on the quantitative analysis of their responses. Students showed mostly post-conventional reasoning in their responses based on a qualitative analysis; however, through comparison of these results it was found that the moral schema students were classified as was not always trul...

A framework for hands-on learning in chemical engineering education—Training students with the end goal in mind
Publication date: Available online 19 March 2019Source: Education for Chemical EngineersAuthor(s): Wenqian Chen, Umang Shah, Clemens BrechtelsbauerAbstractChemical engineering education aims to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on capability to solve practical problems. At Imperial College London, this is practiced via three laboratory-based courses, which span over the first three years of the undergraduate curriculum. The Foundation, Knowledge and Discovery Laboratories were designed based on Kolb’s experiential learning theory as well as Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development. Although these ...

Study of Binqui. An application for smartphones based on the problems without data methodology to reduce stress levels and improve academic performance of chemical engineering students
Publication date: Available online 19 March 2019Source: Education for Chemical EngineersAuthor(s): Sergio Paniagua Bermejo, Raúl Herrero Martínez, Ana Isabel García Pérez, Luis Fernando Calvo PrietoAbstractChemical Engineering students are usually exposed to stress and anxiety situations during university period. Authors consider that a reduction in students’ stress levels can improve their academic results. A new experience based on the introduction of gamification strategies by incorporating a new methodology for solving engineering problems called PWD (problems without data) was proposed. This was related with a s...

The importance of rapid and meaningful feedback on computer-aided graphic expression learning
Publication date: Available online 14 March 2019Source: Education for Chemical EngineersAuthor(s): D. Alique, M. LinaresAbstractMeaningful and effective feedback is a critical issue for a real development of new competences in technical careers. Traditionally, they have been provided in asynchronous form and expressed as a numeric mark. However, many studies indicate that information and guidelines given during this process become more effective as the delayed time between exercise execution and feedback decreases. This fact is especially relevant for modern Graphic Expression courses, in which development of technical abi...
