The pathological outcome of ThinPrep Pap tests diagnosed as glandular cell abnormalities alone versus combined glandular and squamous abnormalities
ConclusionA cytological diagnosis of GCA has a higher risk of glandular abnormality on surgical follow ‐up especially in the older and hrHPV‐negative group (P<  .0001) while a combined diagnosis has a higher risk of a squamous lesion especially in<30  years (P<  .0001). The combination of cytology, hrHPV‐status and patient age can significantly aid in the stratification of the patient into high risk for glandular/squamous lesions which results in appropriate management. Application of Bayesian network modeling to pathology informatics
ConclusionsBayesian network models can be used as powerful and flexible risk assessment tools on large clinical datasets and can quantitatively identify variables that are of greatest significance in predicting specific histopathologic diagnoses and their related prognosis. Resulting BN models are able to provide individualized quantitative risk assessments and prognostication for specific abnormal findings commonly reported in gynecological cytopathology and breast pathology. Does the ‘equal management of equal risks’ model cause overtreatment in patients with positive cervical cytology results for ASCUS/non‐HPV16/18 oncogenic types?
ConclusionThis study believes that the ASCCP recommendations, which state that a ‘colposcopy should be performed on all women with positive cytology for ASCUS/non‐HPV16/18 oncogenic types’, is required to be revised. This will reduce the rate of the colposcopy procedures by 40% in women with ASCUS/HPV positivity. (Source: Diagnostic Cytopathology)

Comparison of urinary cytology and fluorescence in situ hybridization in the detection of urothelial neoplasia: An analysis of discordant results
ConclusionsWe found urinary cytology to be more sensitivity and specific than FISH in the detection of UC, though the difference was not statistically significant. Up to 24% of HG UCs are FISH negative due to an absence of FISH ‐detectable abnormalities in the tumor cells. Paucity of neoplastic cells in the urine also contributes to false‐negative FISH results in both HG and low grade tumors. Negative urinary FISH cannot be taken alone as indicating the absence of significant disease in patients with atypical cytology. (Source: Diagnostic Cytopathology)

A critical appraisal of the Milan system for reporting salivary gland cytology (MSRSGC) with histological correlation over a 3 ‐year period: Indian scenario
ConclusionMSRSGC fulfils the critical need for a uniform, internationally acceptable reporting system with ROM specified for each category. However, large scale multi centre studies need to be conducted before its reliability and validity is proven. (Source: Diagnostic Cytopathology)

Diagnostic role of cytology in serous effusions of patients with hematologic malignancies
ConclusionWe provide evidence that the diagnostic accuracy of cytology with the adjunct of immunocytochemistry is high compared to flow cytometry for detecting hematologic malignancies. In order to improve clinical performance, it is suggested that a cytology triage of serous effusions in all patients with hematologic malignancy must be implemented. Ultrasound ‐guided fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of hepatic and pancreatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumors: A case series
Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal tumors that can affect any part of the body. They can be sporadic or arise in the setting of tuberous sclerosis (TSC). In this article, we report a series of three hepatic and two pancreatic PEComas diagnosed preoperatively with ultrasound ‐guided fine needle aspiration (FNA). All patients were female (age range 28‐70), had no personal history of TSC and presented with a single, localized painless mass. Rapid on‐site evaluation (ROSE) of cytologic samples was performed for all cases to evaluate for cellular content and adequacy of specimens. Direct s...

Intraoperative liquid ‐based cytology of rinsed tissue fragments from head and neck lesions
ConclusionBoth histological and cytological intraoperative diagnoses were possible during a surgery if the LBC ‐RTF technique was used. Moreover, our findings suggest that LBC‐RTF improved the diagnostic accuracy of traditional intraoperative diagnosis. (Source: Diagnostic Cytopathology)
