High Definition Colonoscopy Combined with i-SCAN Imaging Technology Is Superior in the Detection of Adenomas and Advanced Lesions Compared to High Definition Colonoscopy Alone.
Conclusions. i-SCAN detected significantly more adenomas and advanced adenomas compared to high definition white light endoscopy. PMID: 26167108 [PubMed] (Source: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy)

Endosonography-guided biliary drainage with one-step placement of a newly developed fully covered metal stent followed by duodenal stenting for pancreatic head cancer.
Authors: Ito K, Fujita N, Noda Y, Kobayashi G, Obana T, Horaguchi J, Koshita S, Kanno Y, Ogawa T, Kato Y, Yamashita Y Abstract An 83-year-old man was admitted to our department, presenting with jaundice, fever, and nausea. CT revealed a pancreatic head tumor with duodenal invasion. Endoscopic transpapillary biliary drainage was unsuccessful due to stenosis at the second portion of the duodenum and tumor invasion to the papilla of Vater. Using a convex linear array echoendoscope, a fully-covered metal stent was placed across the puncture tract to bridge the duodenum and the bile duct. After improvement of j...

A newly developed variable stiffness duodenoscope for diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
In conclusion, while the VSD performed well, the present models do not appear to offer obvious advantages over the standard duodenoscopes for routine diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP. Prospective studies may be warranted to identify those patients who would benefit from this new technology. PMID: 21197070 [PubMed] (Source: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy)

EUS-FNA for the Diagnosis of Retroperitoneal Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor.
Authors: Sofi AA, Thekdi AD, Nawras A Abstract Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a rare "small round blue cell tumor" that is diagnosed by open biopsy or percutaneous biopsy of the lesion under radiologic guidance. In this case report, we present a novel approach to the diagnosis of a retroperitoneal PNET by endoscopic ultrasound- (EUS-) guided fine needle aspiration (FNA). A 35-year-old man presented with the history of left-sided flank pain and swelling of 3-weeks duration. Computerized tomography (CT) scan of his abdomen revealed a 12.8 × 13 × 12.5 cm cystic and solid mass arising from the r...

Two cases of appendiceal intussusception: a rare diagnostic pitfall in colonoscopy.
Authors: Seddik H, Rabhi M Abstract Partially or completely invaginated appendix mistaken for a polyp during colonoscopy and leading to intussusception is a rare situation. This paper describes our experience with two cases of appendiceal intussusception. In the first case, there was no underlying ileocecal abnormality, and, in the second case, histologic examination of the resected appendix and cecum revealed widespread foci of angiodysplasia, and this was thought to be the basis for the intussusception. The authors present reviews of the literature concerning clinical features and associated conditions a...

Capsule endoscopy in patients with cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, and left heart devices: a review of the current literature.
Conclusion. The clinical use of capsule endoscopy (Given Imaging) is unproblematic in patients with cardiac pacemakers. PMID: 21603020 [PubMed] (Source: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy)

Total Colonic Expulsion with Part of Small Bowel per Vaginum due to Low-Flow Phenomenon and NOMI: A Case Report.
Conclusion. Physician should keep a high level of suspicion in order to prevent it or at least recognise it early on and offer adequate management and hence reducing morbidity and mortality. PMID: 21603021 [PubMed] (Source: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy)

Cat scratch colon.
Authors: Ruiz-Rebollo ML, Velayos-Jiménez B, Prieto de Paula JM, Alvarez Quiñones M, González Hernández JM Abstract Over the past few years, we have read several publications regarding the term "cat scratch colon." This neologism was developed to define some bright red linear markings seen in the colonic mucosa that resemble scratches made by a cat. We would like to communicate a recent case attended at our institution. PMID: 21603022 [PubMed] (Source: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy)

Automatic polyp detection in pillcam colon 2 capsule images and videos: preliminary feasibility report.
Conclusions. These preliminary results suggest that the proposed geometry-based polyp detection scheme works well, not only by allowing the detection of polyps but also by differentiating them from nonprotruding images found in the films. Multiple Intestinal Erosions as a Result of Hemorrhage due to Parasites: Case Reports and Review of the Literature.
Authors: Pitanga Lukashok H, Robles-Jara C, Robles-Medranda C Abstract Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding appears to be uncommon in patients with parasites. In spite of that some reports had described this relationship in patients evaluated during capsule endoscopy procedures; the characteristic of the bleeding lesions remains unclear. This paper describes two patients with a massive obscure gastrointestinal bleeding due to ascariasis, using the new capsule endoscopy technology "MiroCam", describing the characteristic of the lesions found in our patients (observed in a better image quality), and reviewing t...

Carbon dioxide insufflation in routine colonoscopy is safe and more comfortable: results of a randomized controlled double-blinded trial.
Conclusions. This trial provides compelling evidence that CO(2) insufflation significantly reduces bloating and pain after routine colonoscopy in propofol-sedated patients. The procedure is safe with no significant differences in CO(2) between the two groups. PMID: 21747649 [PubMed] (Source: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy)

Endoscopic treatment of a gastrocutaneous fistula using the over-the-scope-clip system: a case report.
We describe the successful endoscopic closure of the fistula using the OTSC system. The patient's clinical followup was uneventful. Fistula closure was successfully implemented as it was documented by imaging and endoscopic examinations performed on the 2nd day and 6th week after the application of the clip. Endoscopic application of the OTSC device was safe and effective for the treatment of a gastrocutaneous fistula. PMID: 21747650 [PubMed] (Source: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy)
