Pattern of inpatient pediatric cardiology consultations in sub ‐Saharan Africa
Abstract Malawi is one of the poorest nations in the world, ranked 151st among 195 countries by the World Bank, with an under‐5‐year mortality rate of 63 per 1000 live births. There are no previous studies describing the spectrum of inpatient pediatric cardiology consultations in sub‐Saharan Africa. A descriptive cohort study was performed at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), a tertiary care hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. Five decades of the Fontan operation: A systematic review of international reports on outcomes after univentricular palliation
In conclusion, patients palliated for complex univentricular heart malformations nowadays benefit from the experience and technical developments of the past decades and have a significantly improved long‐term prognosis. However, important issues concerning postoperative long‐term morbidity and mortality are still unsolved and clear intrinsic limitations of the Fontan circulation are becoming evident as the population of Fontan patients ages. ConclusionsPatients' age, CHD severity, and psychosocial support seem to be related to self‐assessed state of health and impairments in everyday life. To evaluate causality beyond associations, the development of patients' and parents' assessments and quality of life during the phase of transition from childhood to adulthood could be investigated by prospective long‐term studies. Clinical yield of fetal echocardiography for suboptimal cardiac visualization on obstetric ultrasound
