Equine gestational length and location: is there more that the research could be telling us?
Clear definitions of ‘normal’ equine gestation length (GL) are elusive, with GL being subject to a considerable number of internal and external variables that have confounded interpretation and estimation of GL for over 50 years. Consequently, the mean GL of 340 days first established by Rossdale in 1967 for Thoroughbred horses in northern Europe continues to be the benchmark value referenced by veterinarians, breeders and researchers worldwide. Application of a 95% confidence limit to reported GL range values indicates a possible connection between geographic location and GL. Improved knowledge of this variable ma...

One Health, veterinarians and the nexus between disease and food security
Achieving ecologically sustainable food systems for people and animals is one of the greatest challenges facing our world today. Four interdisciplinary approaches that promote a holistic, systems approach to disease prevention and food security are introduced. Current domestic and international initiatives that link disease prevention with food and nutrition security are presented, with an emphasis on animal‐source food and examples from Australia, Tanzania and Timor‐Leste. Veterinarians are uniquely placed to use their training in comparative physiology in support of the production of sustainable, nutritious, ethical ...

Pulmonary adiaspiromycosis in critically endangered northern hairy ‐nosed wombats (Lasiorhinus krefftii)
ConclusionThese are the first reported cases of adiaspiromycosis in northern hairy‐nosed wombats and the organism was associated with significant pathological changes. The rarity and the logistical challenges of presenting northern hairy‐nosed wombats for pathological assessment are a challenge to identifying disease threats in this critically endangered species. Factors affecting colostrum quality in Australian pasture ‐based dairy herds
ConclusionAlthough this study identified factors that increase the risk of poor‐quality colostrum, we concluded that objective assessment using a Brix refractometer is a more reliable means of assessing colostrum quality. (Source: Australian Veterinary Journal)

Examination of the use of intraovarian administration of CaCl2 and zinc gluconate as potential chemosterilants in Bos indicus heifers
ConclusionTreatments used in this study were not able to sterilise most of the B. indicus heifers, but treatment with CaCl2 has the potential to cause complete ovarian atrophy without causing detectable pain. (Source: Australian Veterinary Journal)

Survey of Victorian small ruminant herds for mycoplasmas associated with contagious agalactia and molecular characterisation of Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies capri isolates from one herd
ConclusionThe isolation of Mmc indicates that this subspecies persists in Australian small ruminant populations. However, full genome sequencing and in vitro animal experimentation are needed to unequivocally demonstrate the avirulence of Australian strains. (Source: Australian Veterinary Journal)

Prevalence of exon 11 internal tandem duplications in the C ‐KIT proto‐oncogene in Australian canine mast cell tumours
ConclusionThe prevalence of C‐KIT exon 11 ITDs in Australian canine MCTs is similar to the prevalence in overseas canine populations (overall prevalence in Australia approximately 18%). ITDs were more frequently identified in higher grade MCTs. (Source: Australian Veterinary Journal)
