21 Spiritual Skills
“Becoming fully human is a great adventure – one that requires us to grow and stretch ourselves.” So writes Cindy Wigglesworth at the opening of her book, SQ21: The Twenty-One Skills of Spiritual Intelligence. A practical book with good exercises I highly recommend this book for someone looking to develop their capacity to exercise wisdom and compassion. I was quite impressed with the book’s sensible approach to a sensitive topic. Spiritual books can sometimes be inspiring but vague. Cindy Wigglesworth’s common sense style of writing is both practical and inspiring. She outlines a framework ...

Admitting Our Mistakes
A person who has committed a mistake and doesn’t correct it is committing another mistake. – Confucius Step Ten of the 12 step program tells us that when we are wrong, we are obligated to “promptly” admit it. We aren’t used to admitting our mistakes. We defend ourselves or blame others. This is called denial. Denial is bad for two reasons. First, it keeps us from learning from our mistakes, so we keep making them. Second, we don’t listen to others, so we close off ourselves and become lonely. What a relief it is to admit our wrongs! We don’t have to keep trying to do things the hard wa...

Therapeutic Value of the 12 Steps
Therapy steps Twelve Steps can help manage various types of chronic illness For more than 75 years, the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous have worked for many people with alcohol and other drug problems. Today, the therapeutic value of the steps extends far beyond the field of addiction. Physicians, therapists and other health care professionals are finding that the steps can help people with other chronic illnesses (eg, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and mental illness) find hope and healing. There is increased recognition that a spiritual component, such as the Twelve Steps, is important in addressing mental and phy...

Much More Efficient
[As a recovering alcoholic, addict or co-dependant] we constantly remind ourselves we are no longer running the show, humbly saying to ourselves many times each day -Thy will be done … We are then in much less danger of; over excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-pity, or foolish decisions. We become much more efficient. We do not tire so easily, for we are not burning up energy foolishly as we did when we were trying to arrange life to suit ourselves. AA and the Higher Power
God in His wisdom selected this group of men and women of Alcoholics Anonymous to be the purveyors of His goodness. In selecting them, through whom to bring about this phenomenon, He went not to the proud, the mighty the famous, or the brilliant He went to the humble, the sick the unfortunate He went right to the drunkard the so-called weakling of the world. Well might He have said to us – “Unto your week and feeble hands I have entrusted a power beyond estimate. To you has been given that which has been denied the most learned of your fellows. Not to scientists or statesmen not to wives or mothers not even to ...

Nature Of Our Wrongs
“Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being, the exact nature of our wrongs.” The Alcoholics Anonymous 5th Step – to admit I am wrong. This is the second time the word admit comes up in the programme of the I2 steps. It is so important, because a practising alcoholic never admits he is wrong. He blames anyone, so long as it is not himself. He is never wrong. He ducks for cover every time the finger gets pointed at him, or, more correctly, when he is found out. So, what a come down when the practising alkie comes to A.A., He has to deflate his ego. —THE BIG I AM—. Unless he is ...

SMART Recovery and AA
SMART Recovery Can be Good Alternative or Addition to AA: Researcher For some people in recovery, SMART Recovery groups are a valuable alternative or addition to traditional 12-step groups, according to a researcher at Penn State University. SMART Recovery groups are facilitator-led, structured discussion groups that are closely aligned with counseling techniques. Unlike Alcoholics Anonymous and other traditional 12-step groups, SMART Recovery focuses on self-empowerment instead of surrendering to a higher power, says Deirdre O’Sullivan, PhD, Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling and Specia...

Hard Seats & Cold Feet
Recently I have sat in our Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and asked myself, why am I here? The chairs are hard, it’s very cold and I am physically uncomfortable. Later, I have a thirty mile drive home in an old unheated car and being an old man, I’ll have difficulty getting out and in to that fire I know will be there. Why then, do I suffer it? The answer begins in a day in May 1963 in a hospital in Perth, W.A. where I was very sick with the disease of alcoholism. A man is standing at the foot of my bed “Believe you have a problem,” he says, and I admitted the truth a big problem, beyond me to solve. Next day...

21 Stress Busters
For most people in today’s world, stress is a fact of life. In recovery it is especially true. Although it is impossible to eliminate all stress from daily life, it is possible to control the effect that stress has on the body and the mind. The first step in managing stress is to become aware of events in your life that cause you stress. The causes of stress vary from person to person, so that what causes you stress may not cause stress for another person. Once you are aware of what causes you stress, the goal is to find ways to avoid or control these things. Relaxation techniques, when used consistently, can prove effec...
