Aid workers share experiences of evacuations from eastern Aleppo, Syria
Intensified fighting in eastern Aleppo starting in July 2016 resulted in thousands of people injured and killed, and has deprived the civilian population of essential services, including health care. Can tiny bacteria help stop the spread of disease?
Mosquitoes kill an estimated 700 000 people a year by transmitting viruses that cause diseases like chikungunya, dengue and Zika. With the help of WHO, researchers have discovered that mosquitoes artificially infected with a bacterium called Wolbachia do not transmit these diseases as easily. Wolbachia bacteria exist naturally, and it may be possible to create populations of mosquitoes that cannot transmit deadly viruses by breeding mosquitoes infected with the bacteria. Cholera vaccination campaign for Haitians hardest hit by Hurricane Matthew
More than 729 000 people in Haiti have been vaccinated against cholera to reduce the burden of severe illness and deaths in areas at high risk. With the support of WHO/PAHO and other partners including UNICEF, International Medical Corps, the Red Cross and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, vaccination teams have reached more than 90% of people in the departments of Grand Anse and Sud where cholera cases had been reported and water and sanitation systems were damaged by the hurricane. Finding the gaps in meeting adolescent health needs in Nepal
In 2015, the Nepal Ministry of Health worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) to redesign the country ’s Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Programme. Utilizing the Innov8 Approach – an 8-step review process geared towards helping health programmes better address equity, gender, human rights and social determinants of health – a 15-person review team worked to uncover the gaps.
