The trustees of Alcohol Research UK and Alcohol Concern are pleased to announce the merger of the two charities following the completion of detailed negotiations over the last six months. Moving beyond patient and public involvement in alcohol research
Alcohol Research UK and Fuse, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health, are delighted to announce a joint one day workshop on patient and public involvement in research where we will explore different ways to design and assess research that aims for co-production. Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) is a requirement for most publicly funded research in the UK, but what it is and how to do it well is not so straightforward. This is particularly the case if the intention is to design, conduct and translate co-productive research. This one day workshop will introduce delegates to our approach to co-production ...

Co-production in alcohol research: what can we learn?
While alcohol harms can occur across society, many of those most profoundly affected are also the most vulnerable and hard to reach individuals. As a new study by researchers at Liverpool John Moores University shows, the role of alcohol in the lives of homeless drinkers can be very damaging – but it is also very complex. Homelessness can be barrier to recovery: something acknowledged in a recent report by the Centre for Social Justice. Equally, problem drinking can be both a cause and a consequence of homelessness – but when it is a cause, it is rarely the sole reason why an individual finds themselves ‘on the ...

Vulnerable people at risk of homelessness and alcohol dependency need positive support networks in times of crisis, a new study suggests
This report highlights the impact that significant life events, such as deaths, births, employment/unemployment and secure/unsecure relationships, can have on alcohol consumption and living situation. “The results demonstrate how low levels of support during times of crisis can lead to homelessness and alcohol dependency and it is often an accumulation of adverse life events that result in this.” Dr James Nicholls, Director of Research and Policy Development at Alcohol Research UK said: “The complex relationship between alcohol dependence, homelessness and social support needs to be better understood.  It affects so...

The Time of My Life Project: A Realist Evaluation
This report presents findings from an evaluation conducted, primarily, in year 2 of the project.  In particular, it presents the perspectives of a range of people who deliver or use TOML and should be read in conjunction with Aquarius’ TOML monitoring data. There are few specialist alcohol services for older people in the UK (Wadd et al. 2011). Public Health Birmingham’s 2013 Drug and Alcohol Needs Assessment identified 21 agencies offering some level of support for people with substance problems (Kilgallon 2013). TOML is, however, the only known specialist older people’s alcohol service. Methods This evaluation use...

Updated Local Alcohol Profiles for England
Yesterday, Public Health England released the latest update to their Local Alcohol Profiles for England. In addition to information on alcohol-related mortality, hospital admissions and treatment, this version includes new data on both alcohol sales and numbers of licensed premises. The headline figures show that around three quarters of the population drink within the revised low risk alcohol guidelines of 14 units a week.  16.5% of drinkers binged on their heaviest drinking day in the previous week – with ‘binge’ defined as drinking over 6 units (for women) or 8 units (for men) in one session. 15.5% of the po...

Drinkers much less likely to notice responsible drinking messages in pub environment, says new study
Drinkers are much less likely to notice responsible drinking messages on posters displayed in a busy, cluttered pub environment than in a plain and simple room, show results of a study published today by psychologists at London South Bank University (LSBU) and Alcohol Research UK. [Read the full report here] Results of the research trial show that responsible drinking messages displayed on posters positioned inside LSBU’s dedicated ‘Pub-Lab’ research facility received only 16 per cent of the number of glances directed at the same poster when placed in a comparatively sparsely furnished, plain environment. On average...

Evaluating the interactive effects of responsible drinking messages and attentional bias on actual drinking behaviours
Conclusion This project raises new questions for researchers, in particular, around the varied relationship between attentional bias scores and attention times given to alcohol cues, messages and actual drinks. From an applied perspective, it suggests that both placement and content influence the amount of attention responsible drinking messages receive.  However, while less cue-laden environments may be more effective locations in terms of visual attention, in the real world such locations are usually not places where people typically drink.  Therefore, the potential impact on behaviour – which is already weak – may...

Researching with purpose: what is the point of public involvement?
On Wednesday, 5th April Alcohol Research UK will be hosting a national conference on public involvement in alcohol research.  Here our new Senior Research and Policy Officer, Jo Cairns, describes her journey from conventional academic researcher to someone with a passion for working with the public. Since finishing my PhD in 2012, I have for the most part enjoyed doing research and have worked on a variety of projects seeking to better understand and prevent health inequalities, from systematic reviews to statistical analyses.  I have often craved interaction with real people rather than numbers in a spreadsheet, but it...

New research on alcohol marketing suggests current regulations don ’t work
Research published today in the journal Addiction provides new insights into global alcohol marketing, its regulation and its potential impacts on youth consumption. The journal supplement, supported with funding from Alcohol Research UK and the Institute of Alcohol Studies, analyses the effectiveness of existing regulations and voluntary codes, especially in preventing young people from being exposed to alcohol brands and adverts. It also contains further evidence linking exposure to alcohol marketing with alcohol use. The findings largely confirm what much prior research has suggested: that there is a relationship betwee...

The trustees of Alcohol Research UK and Alcohol Concern are pleased to announce plans to merge the activities of the two charities by April 2017. Both organisations share virtually identical charitable objects, with a clear mission to reduce the harm caused by alcohol. Alcohol Research UK has a long record of research excellence and impact, while Alcohol Concern brings a strong media and campaigning profile. Public Health England publish review of evidence on alcohol
Today, Public Health England has published a review of international evidence on alcohol policy and harm reduction. The new report, based on almost two years of research and analysis, addresses a number of key policy areas. These include: The price of alcohol and its effect on consumption The impact of both the number of alcohol outlets in a given area, and the times at which they operate, on a range of potential harms The effectiveness of existing controls on marketing, sponsorship and promotion The role of ‘brief interventions’ in preventing harmful drinking The effectiveness of schools-based education programmes T...
