Uncovering the sequential patterns in transformative and non-transformative discourse during collaborative inquiry learning
This study used transition-rate analysis, entropy-analysis, and sequential pattern mining to analyze the chat message of 144 students of two-year colleges. The participants worked on tasks related to Ohm's Law in a simulation-based collaborative-inquiry-learning environment. The results revealed that students in groups who completed tasks successfully tended to ensure that everyone in their group had a shared understanding of the relationship between the variables before they moved on to the next step. In contrast, students in groups who did not complete tasks successfully were more likely to regulate the process without r...

Influence of satisfaction and preparedness on online students' feelings of anxiety
This study examined how various factors associated with the online learning experience – students' demographics, prior online learning experience, satisfaction, and sense of preparedness for the course after completing an online learning orientation – influence online students' feelings of anxiety. Using a binary logistic regression, our findings confirmed that demographics (i.e., female, full-time, first-year online student), prior online learning experience, and sense of preparedness predicted online students' feelings of anxiety. Student age and student satisfaction were less conclusive. Overall, our study reiterate...

School counselors' changing perceptions of ePortfolios: From graduate students to professionals
This study examined how alumni perceived their ePortfolio they created during their time as school counseling graduate students and whether they still use either in their work as school counseling professionals. The findings support previous research on school counseling students' utilization of ePortfolios in their graduate program. However, the findings also show a decrease in valuation of ePortfolios by school counseling professionals post-graduation. Lack of time and lack of perceived value by school administrators were the most cited reasons for not continuing to use ePortfolios as professionals or integrating ePortfo...

Becoming a competent self: A developmental process of adult distance learning
Publication date: Available online 19 December 2018Source: The Internet and Higher EducationAuthor(s): Kyungmee Lee, Hyoseon Choi, Young Hoan ChoAbstractIn this article, we aim to provide a developmental approach to understanding adult students' learning experiences of undertaking university-level study to completion at an open university, by employing a notion of “becoming”. With the rapid growth of a number of online course offerings, there are an increasing number of adult learners entering or returning to universities. Despite the growing number of non-traditional adult students in online higher education, little i...

Time well spent: Creating a community of inquiry in blended first-year writing courses
This study examines whether blended first-year writing courses can function as Communities of Inquiry and analyzes whether the amount of time spent online impacts the extent to which students positively perceive teaching presence, social presence, and cognitive presence. A modified version of the 34-item Community of Inquiry survey instrument was delivered to students enrolled in 22 sections of a FYW course at the same university. Findings indicate students in high blend (50% online) classes perceived greater degrees of teaching presence, social presence, and cognitive presence than students in medium blend (33% online) cl...

Situating videoconferencing in a connected class toward intercultural knowledge development: A comparative reflection approach
Publication date: April 2019Source: The Internet and Higher Education, Volume 41Author(s): Yun DaiAbstractThe paper discusses how the intercultural knowledge is enhanced in a technology-enabled learning environment. We developed a comparative reflection approach, for an undergraduate course participated by three groups of students, who were globally distributed in the US, Mainland China, and Taiwan. Made possible by the videoconferencing technology, the approach included two group-based tasks of describing, comparing, analyzing, and reflecting on everyday activities and cultural practices. To evaluate the design effectiven...

Publication date: Available online 11 October 2018Source: The Internet and Higher EducationAuthor(s): Michael Thai, Nicola Sheeran, Daniel J. CummingsAbstractThere is a growing body of research exploring the potential benefits of implementing Facebook groups in the educational domain. The present study contributes to this literature by investigating the impact of having an official course Facebook group on several important outcomes. In a quasi-experiment, students in a second year university course either had access to an official course Facebook group or not, depending on the campus on which they were enrolled. Results i...

Identifying consistent patterns of quality learning discussions in blended learning
Publication date: Available online 28 September 2018Source: The Internet and Higher EducationAuthor(s): Feifei Han, Robert A. EllisAbstractAdopting relational perspectives on university student learning, this research identified patterns of varying quality of learning through blended discussions. It investigated associations amongst conceptions of learning through discussions, approaches to face-to-face and online discussions, and academic achievement amongst two cohorts of postgraduates (N = 387 and N = 184) in the same business course over two consecutive years in an Australian university. Inclusion of two studie...

Relational and psychological factors affecting exam participation and student achievement in online college courses
This study aims to understand and model the effects of relationship factors and intra-individual psychological factors on exam participation and achievement of students enrolled in an online university course. The results of a survey of 506 students enrolled in university online courses showed that our initial theoretical model only partially fit the data. In fact, data analysis revealed that the relational factors studied exerted only indirect effects on whether online students completed the course. Perceived social support from teachers and peers, as well as the feeling of belonging to the learning community, were antece...
