In vitro transdifferentiation of umbilical cord stem cells into cardiac myocytes: Role of growth factors
In this study we aimed to define the conditions for ex-vivo differentiation of cord blood stem cells to cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells. These conditions include the combination of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) and platelet derived growth factor AB (PDGF-AB). Forty cord blood samples were included in this work. In this work, the percentage of CD34+ cells, CD31+ cells and CD34/31+ cells in mononuclear cells (MNC) suspension was counted prior to culture (day zero), and day 10 in the different growth factor cocktails used as well as the control tube, from which the fold...

The role of IMA in ruling out ischemia in patients presenting with chest pain, and its relation with the extent of coronary artery disease
Conclusion Serum IMA is a useful marker to rule out non ischemic patients presented with suspected ACS and is significantly related to the number of affected vessels. (Source: The Egyptian Journal of Critical Care Medicine)

Role of Phosphorylated Neurofilament H as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in traumatic brain injury
Conclusion Phosphorylated Neurofilament H can be used as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in patients with TBI as seen by the presence of significant correlations between the marker levels and different clinical and radiological tools. (Source: The Egyptian Journal of Critical Care Medicine)

Thyrotoxic burden in the ICU and the value of bedside thyroid ultrasound in the diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis and thyrotoxic cardiac emergencies in critically-ill patients
Conclusion Thyrotoxicosis and thyrotoxic cardiac emergencies are not uncommon in the ICU and should be thoroughly investigated as most cases are clinically masked. Thyroid ultrasound is a feasible, rapid and accurate bedside diagnostic tool for suspected thyrotoxic emergencies in ICU. (Source: The Egyptian Journal of Critical Care Medicine)

Impact of oral omega-3 fatty acids supplementation in early sepsis on clinical outcome and immunomodulation
Conclusion The use of a short term high dose omega-3 therapy is safe and associated with promising effects on inflammatory cascade and may play a role in treatment of these patients. (Source: The Egyptian Journal of Critical Care Medicine)

Differentiating sepsis from non-infective systemic inflammatory response syndrome: Comparison between C-reactive protein and Leptin
Conclusion We concluded that despite serum Leptin may not be beneficial in early differentiation between sepsis and non infectious SIRS on admission; it may be highly specific on second day. (Source: The Egyptian Journal of Critical Care Medicine)

Assessment of hypotension during dialysis as a manifestation of myocardial ischemia in patients with chronic renal failure
Conclusions Patients with CKD and regular hemodialysis who experience moderate or severe intradialytic hypotension have significantly higher prevalence of myocardial ischemia and stress induced myocardial dysfunction, than those who experience no or mild intradialytic hypotension. Demographics of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) Egyptian patients admitted to Assiut University Hospital: Validation of TIMI and GRACE scores
Conclusion ACS occurs at a relatively young age in our locality, in patients sharing common known coronary risk factors. STEMI patients, in our locality, represent approximately one-third of ACS patients and are associated with worse in-hospital as well as 30-day outcomes. Both TIMI and GRACE risk scores are valid for use in ACS patients in the Assiut governorate (c-statistics 0.72–0.97), with a better discriminative ability for the GRACE score, especially in UA/STEMI patients. The effectiveness of non-invasive ventilation in management of respiratory failure in Palestine a prospective observational study
This study has shown benefits of NIV in avoiding the call for invasive MV in patients exhibiting respiratory failure of varied etiology, with similar results comparable to previous studies in developed countries. Thus, increased usage of NIV in respiratory failure is likely to affect favorably in countries with limited resources such as Palestine. (Source: The Egyptian Journal of Critical Care Medicine)
